Help Us, Help you!

This is a new segment to help people with simple things the check before calling in that will save you and the technician time.

So your dryer isn't working and you are interested in having a technician look at it. Here is what you should do first to save yourself time and get your issues dealt with asap.

First, What is the model number of the unit? You can find it usually around the door

Does it turn on?
No - check your breakers, if they are good, tell technician that it doesn't turn on
Yes - next question

Does it get warm?
No - tell technician it doesn't get warm
Yes, but not for long - let technician know it doesn't stay hot
Yes, but the clothing still wet- Next question

Is air coming out of the back of the machine?
No - tell technician that it is not blowing air
Yes- plug back in the vent and check outside

Does the outside vent have good airflow
No- tell the technician that you need a vent cleaning
Yes but the machine is still not drying clothing - Tell the technician that you have checked everything you can and its still not drying the clothing.

Dryers can be broken down to two operations. Heat and air flow. If it has both it should work.

How it works Wednesday! Propane Refrigerators! aka the flame that cools?

If you have never seen one of these machines I would not blame you for thinking that we just made this up. How can burning propane cause sub zero temperatures in a freezer? The answer: Science! Propane refrigerators run on a gas mixture of ammonia, hydrogen and sodium chromate. It is the process of combining these gasses that causes the cooling. So where does a propane flame fit into this equation? If combining these gasses is what causes the cooling then we of course need to separate them so that they can combine again. Supplying heat to the mixture in the boiler causes the ammonia to separate from the other chemicals. The ammonia boils and rises to the condenser where it releases the heat being condensed into liquid. The liquid then makes its way into the freezer where it combines back with the other chemicals which causes a rapid chemical reaction that results in heat absorption cooling the unit. That mixture then returns to the boiler to start the process again.

Myth Buster Mondays! Gas appliances can use whatever flammable gas you attach to them.

False

WHile most types of gas appliances can be converted to handle natural gas or Liquid Petroleum (LP), other gasses will damage the units and can be incredibly unsafe. In fact without the proper orifices and regulator conversion, using the wrong gas can be a significant hazard. a misconfigured oven or dryer can produce carbon monoxide in deathly amounts. Always make sure that when your machines are installed, they are done by a professional who has the peroper know-how and equipment to set the flame height, oxygen mixture, and excretion orifices for the gas type you have.

How it works Wednesday! Mechanical timers!

The dials you find on older dryers, fridges, and washers. The design starts with a disc with groves and dips molded into it similar to a record. like a record player, there are arms laid across it with the tips laying into the groves. As the disc turns it raises and lowers the arms which make or break contact with contacts in the device. This allows it to direct power to different parts of the machine at different times. move the disc is a simple motor that is powered at 60 hz frequency. The arms are made to be able to be moved up and down as long as the wheel only moves the direction it's designed to spin, (clockwise). Forcing a timer back can cause damage to these little metal arms and cause your machine to not function properly, i.e. not turning something on or off when it’s supposed to. If you still have one of these machines, take good care of it, they don't make them like this anymore and it is really a shame.
