Dave Koch is an award-winning commercial photographer and the founder of AeroMedia Aviation Photography, specializing in private and business aviation. After more than 40 years behind a camera, including 15 years as a television news photographer, Dave has built a growing aviation practice photographing aircraft for brokers, operators, manufacturers, flight departments and aviation businesses across the country. His work ranges from small business aircraft to Gulfstreams and BBJs, as well as prototype and next-generation aircraft.
But Dave's story is also about building a business inside the aviation industry. He has learned how to work around aircraft schedules, maintenance, flight departments, FBOs and the operational realities that come with photographing multimillion-dollar assets, while developing relationships throughout business aviation. His work has been recognized nationally, and he also writes and teaches about aviation photography, sharing what he has learned about both the creative and business sides of working in this highly specialized industry.

Another reason the flight schedule and maintenance schedule can’t live in separate worlds.

A trip may look perfectly workable on the calendar — until an inspection, maintenance event, MEL, or upcoming requirement changes the plan.

Good dispatch support looks beyond tomorrow’s departure.

It means keeping upcoming operational requirements visible so the team can anticipate:
• Aircraft availability
• Scheduled maintenance
• Required inspections
• Potential downtime
• Aircraft swaps or repositioning
• Crew and passenger impacts

The recent Citation exemption change is a good reminder that regulatory developments can quickly become operational issues.

A flight department may have the aircraft ready, the crew assigned, passengers confirmed, and the trip completely planned — only to discover that a regulatory change affects whether or how the mission can operate.

That’s why staying current matters.

Someone needs to be watching for changes that could affect:
• Aircraft eligibility and operating requirements
• Crew qualifications and procedures
• Dispatch and trip planning
• Documentation and compliance
• Upcoming missions already on the schedule

Regulatory monitoring shouldn’t begin when the crew is preparing to depart.
The best time to discover a change is when there is still time to do something about it.
