We've spent the past week on the reinstallation of the 1978 Gabriel Kney organ at Zion Lutheran Church in Indiana, PA. In fact, most of the organ had remained in place, but numerous components were renewed or replaced.

We expect to complete the work next week.

Not as glamorous as many of the other photos I've seen connected with the project, but last week we loaded a truck bound for Dallas with the console and associated parts for the Perkins Chapel project at Southern Methodist University. We had completed numerous woodworking details (e.g. making a matching new left toestud bolster and finishing it) to make it ready for use in its new home.

We're also in the midst of converting the Choir Cor de Nuit 8' and Nazard 2-2/3' of the 1956 Casavant at St. Titus Church in Aliquippa, PA, from the original wooden stoppers (we call them "mushrooms") to ramped caps. We already did the same work to the Great Quintadena 16' and Swell RohrflΓΆte 8' last year, as shown below.

Our thanks to Oyster Pipe Works, LTD. for the expert fabrication of the new canisters.

Our current major project is the refurbishment of the 1978 Gabriel Kney organ at Zion Lutheran Church in Indiana, PA. The organ was well engineered and has held up quite well, but after 45 years it was time for an overhaul.

New drawknob units and slider solenoids will be installed, as well as a reasonable complement of thumb pistons and toestuds linked to a new combination actionβ€”the organ's always been used as a teaching and recital instrument, but has had only 6 general toestuds and 1 memory level. The new system will have 50 users, each afforded 100 memories.

The majority of façade pipes have modest damage to the toes and feet, and the copper Trompete (installed en chamade) is quite tarnished, along with occasional dents. These stops are currently with our pipemaker. The schwimmers have already been recovered, and the pallets were refreshed. New LED lights, both for the keydesk area as well as interior service, will also be provided.

We anticipate reinstallation in January 2024. Our heartfelt thanks to Zion Lutheran Church and Dr. Christine Clewell, Director of Music, for engaging us in this work.

We recently completed a pair of unfinished consoles for a colleague's project. The carcases were of riftsawn red oak, while the interiors were cherry with padauk accents. Matching adjustable benches and pedalboards were part of the project as well.

Just heard from a colleague that David Clare Daugherty passed away this week. We worked with him first at Northmont Presbyterian in Pittsburgh, and then The Old Stone Church in downtown Cleveland. He genuinely seemed to be enjoying his work there, and very much looking forward to the future.

Please pray for the repose of his soul.
