Hi Everyone, I’ve been sitting with something for a while now, and I finally put it into words.

I’m noticing a quiet but profound longing in leaders—for connection that feels real, for work that makes sense, for relationships that aren’t propped up by performance.

Some days remind us that leadership isn’t shaped by comfort. It’s shaped by presence.

Yesterday, Leadership with Horses met its fiercest weather yet. A blustery, relentless downpour. Gutters gushing. puddles turning into rivers across the asphalt. Rain hammered the barn roof like a kettle drum band. And that unmistakable Northwest chill crept into fingertips, toes, earlobes, and noses. The kind of cold you just can’t shake.

And still… it was a wonderful day, full of clarity and connection

Slick — our seasoned Quarter Horse with Cushing’s and an old soul’s intuition — stepped forward with quiet purpose. He read the room the way only a horse can: wordlessly, without judgment, attuned to what lies beneath the surface. He seemed to know exactly who needed his presence, his grounding energy, and his gentle clarity. He reminded the team how leadership begins not with force, but with listening.

At the end of the session, here’s what the team shared:
“Best offsite ever!”
“It was wonderful — so outside the norm.”
“It’s striking how the skills you need to work successfully with horses transfer directly to building a successful human team.”
“A perfect mix of learning and new experience.”
“Such a fun and meaningful, metaphor-rich experience.”

Even in the storm — maybe because of the storm — the learning was powerful, the insights were deep, and the horses did what they do best: remind us how to show up with presence, honesty, and intention.

Yesterday offered a simple truth:

Leadership grows when we are willing to meet the moment exactly as it is — rain, cold, uncertainty and all — and still choose to be fully present.

Such a great day yesterday with a corporate marketing/sales team. They were so excited about their afternoon session with the horses that they showed up in cowboy boots and hats, bandanas. It was an enjoyable afternoon of learning and laughs!

It was a brisk, sunny day in mid-January for Leadership with Horses to kick off its 2025 season with a group of hospital CEOs. Thanks to Kathleen Goodman for her partnership and also to the wonderful horses who blessed us with their teaching and wisdom.
