Hey y'all!
It was a strong market across the board this week at Poor Boy Livestock Auction, with good demand and competitive bidding throughout the sale.
FEEDER STEERS/BULLS
500–600 lbs: Strong market with the top end reaching $4.01/lb
Several nice 500-weight steers reached the $4.00/lb mark
600–700 lbs: Topped out at $3.73/lb
800–900 lbs: $285.00–$327.00/lb, with some outstanding 800-weight steers bringing $327.00/lb
FEEDER HEIFERS
500–600 lbs: Strong demand, with averages beginning around $3.50/lb and the top end reaching nearly $3.90/lb
600–700 lbs: Particularly sought after, with the market ranging from approximately $3.25/lb to $3.47/lb
700–800 lbs: $263.00–$301.00/lb
NOTABLE HIGHLIGHT: Some fancy, crossbred heifers in the 200–500 lb range brought $1,100–$2,000 per head, showing just how much demand there was for the right kind of lightweight heifer.
We also had a larger offering of plainer cattle and some fat, bawling calves this week. Even with the added flesh and condition on some of those cattle, the market remained very competitive, with buyers actively bidding throughout the sale.
PACKER COWS & BULLS
Packer cows: Mostly $120–$155/cwt
Packer bulls: $160–$194/cwt
COW/CALF PAIRS
The cow/calf market was active as well, with noticeable differences based on age, condition and quality.
3–6 year-old cows with calves at side: $2,750–$4,200/pair
Thinner 3–6 year-old pairs: $2,000–$3,100/pair
7 year-old and short-mouthed cows with calves at side: $1,900–$2,300/pair
Older cows with calves at side: $2,100–$2,750/pair
Thinner, plainer older pairs: $1,500–$1,950/pair
STOCK COW MARKET
The stock cow market showed good demand as well, with values varying according to age, stage of pregnancy, condition and quality.
1–3 year-old cows, 1st & 2nd stage bred: $2,650–$3,250/head
1–3 year-old cows, 3rd stage bred: $2,450–$3,550/head
4–6 year-old cows, 1st & 2nd stage bred: $2,150–$3,450/head
4–6 year-old cows, 3rd stage bred: $2,400–$2,750/head
7 year-old to short & solid-mouthed cows, 1st & 2nd stage bred: $2,050–$3,000/head
Thinner 7 year-old to short & solid-mouthed cows: $1,500–$2,000/head
7 year-old to short & solid-mouthed cows, 3rd stage bred: $2,450–$3,400/head
Older cows, 2nd & 3rd stage bred: $1,050–$2,300/head
Overall, it was a very good market from top to bottom. Quality cattle were rewarded, but perhaps just as importantly, there was good competition for the cattle that weren't quite as fancy.
