🌿Plant Spotlight: Ficus Elastica Tineke 🌿

Yes, this is a real plant! Popular for it’s beautiful tricolor leaves this plant can grow to be upwards of 10ft tall indoors. If you’re familiar with a Fiddle Leaf Fig, both of these plants actually reside in the Ficus family. If you’ve had a Fiddle Leaf Fig and found it to be a struggle, try a Ficus Elastica variety. They tend to be a much more hardy plant.

This plant is native to South East Asia including Malaysia, Indonesia and the Himalayas.

Care at a Glance:
- Bright, indirect light ( the better the light, the better the variegation. But no direct light)
- Water when the 75% of soil is dry (overwatering is the most common killer of this plant)
- Prefers a chunky, well-draining substrate
- Grows relatively fast
- Enjoys moderate to high humidity

Plant Spotlight: Hawaiian Pothos
While it may look a lot like a Golden Pothos at first glance, the Hawaiian Pothos have leaves that can get truly MASSIVE. This is especially true if the plant is given something to climb such as a moss pole. The extra support really makes the leaves increase in size drastically. Aside from their leaf size, Hawaiian Pothos feature yellow and cream colored heavy variegation throughout their leaves.
It comes as a surprise that this plant is not actually native to Hawaii, but instead the Mo’orea Island in French Polynesia as well as parts of Southeast Asia, and the Solomon Islands. Although it isn’t a native Hawaiian plant, it got its name because once it was imported to Hawaii it thrived and grew much larger in size! This plant will thrive climbing or trailing, the choice is up to you!
Pothos plants are notoriously hard to kill even if you have a black thumb!
Care at a Glance:
- Bright, indirect light ( the better the light, the better the variegation. But no direct light)
- Water when the top half or more of soil is dry (overwatering is the most common killer of this plant)
- It isn’t picky about soil but benefits from a chunky, well-draining substrate
- Upsizes fast with a support

Bigger isn't always better!

One of the most common mistakes I see is assuming that a plant should automatically go into a much larger pot when it's time to repot. While it seems like you're giving your plant more room to grow, sometimes a pot that's too large can actually do more harm than good.

Here's why:

Plants absorb water through their roots. If there's too much soil compared to the size of the root system, that extra soil stays wet much longer because there aren't enough roots to use the moisture.

This creates what's known as an unbalanced moisture-to-root ratio, which can lead to:
- Soil staying wet for too long
- Increased risk of root rot
- Fungal growth
- Yellowing leaves
- Slow or stalled growth

A plant that's sitting in constantly wet soil can't get the oxygen its roots need to stay healthy.

So how do you know it's actually time to size up?

Look for signs like:
- Roots circling the inside of the pot
- Roots growing out of the drainage holes
- Water running straight through because there's very little soil left
- The plant drying out much faster than it used to

In most cases, moving up just one pot size (about 1–2 inches wider) is all your plant needs.

Remember healthy roots grow healthy plants! 🌱

🌿 Plant Spotlight: Philodendron Billietiae 🌿

With its long, narrow leaves and vibrant orange petioles (leaf stems), the Philodendron Billietiae is a true showstopper that's become a favorite among aroid collectors.

Native to the tropical rainforests of South America, this climbing Philodendron develops larger and more dramatic leaves as it matures, especially when given a sturdy support like a moss pole.

Here are a key characteristics about this beautiful plant:

🧡 Those bright orange petioles are one of its signature features! They create a striking contrast against the deep green foliage and make the plant instantly recognizable.

- It's a climber, not a trailer. In nature, Billietiae climbs trees to reach brighter light. Giving it a moss pole or other vertical support encourages larger leaves and healthier, more natural growth.

- It prefers a chunky, well-draining substrate. Like many aroids, it appreciates plenty of airflow around its roots and doesn't enjoy sitting in soggy soil.
