If there’s one wine estate that echoes the soul of Burgundy, yet stands tucked away in Switzerland’s serene Alpine foothills, it’s Gantenbein. For over 42 years, Daniel and Martha Gantenbein have poured their hearts into crafting wines that transcend geography, mimicking the elegance, depth, and complexity of the finest Burgundian Grand Crus. Their story is nothing short of remarkable. When they took over Martha’s family wine estate in 1982, they inherited vineyards planted with local Swiss grape varieties that produced simple, forgettable wines. But the Gantenbeins had a vision - they wanted to create world-class wines, and they did just that. After extensive research trips to Burgundy and the Mosel, they carefully replanted their vineyards with high-quality clones of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling. Over the years, their meticulous vineyard management, which includes passing through the vines up to eight times before harvest to ensure only the best grapes are picked, has earned them a loyal global following. Their Pinot Noir is an absolute revelation - a wine so hauntingly beautiful, with an accent of reduction, it captures the terroir of the Alps and mineral-laden essence of the Côte de Nuits. With each sip, you’re greeted by layers of dark cherries, wild strawberry, and spice, all wrapped in a structure that rivals the greatest producers in Burgundy.
