❄️ Cold Weather Reminder: Fire Alarm Systems & Freezing Temperatures 🚨
As winter temperatures drop, it’s important to remember that fire alarm systems are also affected by cold weather—not just sprinkler systems.
The NFPA 72 – National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code requires fire alarm equipment to be installed, maintained, and operated in accordance with manufacturer specifications. Most fire alarm control panels, power supplies, batteries, and notification devices are not rated for freezing temperatures.
When fire alarm equipment is exposed to cold conditions, it can result in:
• Battery failure or reduced capacity
• Power supply issues
• LCD display and keypad malfunctions
• Condensation and corrosion as temperatures fluctuate
• False troubles, supervisory signals, or complete system failure
NFPA 72 also requires fire alarm systems to be maintained in operable condition at all times. If cold weather conditions compromise system reliability, the system may be considered impaired and no longer compliant.
🔥 Important reminders for building owners and managers:
• Fire alarm control panels and power supplies must be located in heated spaces
• Electrical rooms, riser rooms, and alarm panels should be maintained within the manufacturer’s listed temperature range
• Temporary heaters are not a reliable long-term solution
• Loss of heat should be addressed immediately
Cold weather failures often happen quietly—until the system is needed most.
If you have concerns about fire alarm equipment in unheated or marginally heated spaces, now is the time to address it.
