After age 1, breast milk continues boost your child’s immune system. It can help reduce the severity of any illness. When your child gets sick, breast milk may be the only food or drink they can manage, especially during bouts of vomiting or diarrhea. Nursing is also very comforting to a sick toddler.

Nursing also offers security at a time when your child is developing quickly and the world is an overwhelming place. Breastfeeding remains very important to an older baby or toddler.

The biggest challenge you might face is coping with the opinions of others on how long you should continue to breastfeed. It can be hard for friends and family to understand your choice to continue nursing. Let them know that breastfeeding actually makes life easier for you and your child!

Hi all, here's this week's Clinical Question!
**********
LactFact: There is mounting evidence regarding the importance of breastfeeding well beyond 6 months of age.
**********
What are the child benefits of breastfeeding after 6 months of age?

Breastfeeding rates drop every month postpartum due to several challenges such as returning to employment, low production, latch issues, pain, etc. Many families ask whether breastfeeding matters after 6 months when infants start complementary feeding.

The article for this week reviews the evidence regarding child benefits of breastfeeding after 6 months.

The authors start by reviewing changes in human milk over time. In general, bioactive factors including IgA, IgG, lysozyme, lactoferrin markedly increase after 12 months postpartum, supporting the health of the breastfed child by preventing infection and supporting growth and development over time.

What are the benefits of breastfeeding beyond 6 months? See the question!

What do you believe are evidence-based child benefits to breastfeeding beyond 6 months? Choose 1 or more:

A. Breastfeeding beyond 6 months is associated with a lower risk of environmental and food allergies compared to breastfeeding for less than 6 months.

B. Infants over 6 months who breastfeed have a lower risk of ear infections than those who don’t.

C. Longer breastfeeding after 6 months is associated with lower blood pressure.

D. Breastfeeding for more than 12 months is associated with a lower risk of dental caries.

E. Breastfeeding after 6 months is associated with a lower risk for childhood hospitalization and respiratory infections.

F. Breastfeeding for more than 6 months reduces the risk of childhood leukemia.

G. Children breastfed for over 12 months have a lower risk of malaria.

Did you know: 83% of the many mothers who fall asleep during night feeds do not plan to fall asleep? As the debate over biology versus safe-sleep recommendations rages on, findings like this reinforces the AAP grudging admission that it’s safer to fall asleep with a baby in an adult bed than the much riskier chair or sofa. This 2024 study even mentions advantages of suggesting parents take steps to make their adult bed safer just in case. Coming from the AAP’s top sleep team, that’s really saying something!. When discussing lactation, the health effects of human milk often get top billing, but nursing gives children much more than calories and immune-boosting ingredients. Nursing provides sensory stimulation that enhances infant neurodevelopment.[1] It is one of baby’s first social interactions. The s...
