Cost Management in from PMBOK-08

Cost Management is full of formulas and reserves that are easy to confuse on the PMP exam. Here’s the quick version in 6 slides:

1) Cost Management Plan: currency, thresholds, estimate types, and how the project is financed
2) Funding Limit Reconciliation: match planned spending to the funding limits
3) Cost Baseline = Cost of Activities + Contingency Reserve (for identified risks)
4) Project Budget = Cost Baseline + Management Reserve (for unidentified risks, needs a change request)

SPI = EV ÷ PV
CPI = EV ÷ AC
SV = EV − PV
CV = EV − AC
Index above 1 is good. Positive variance is good.

Forecast
EAC = BAC ÷ CPI
TCPI = (BAC − EV) ÷ (BAC − AC).
Above 1 means the remaining work is harder than the funds allow.

Exam tip: Contingency reserve is inside the cost baseline. Management reserve sits outside it, so you can’t touch it without a change request.

Scope + Schedule + Cost baselines = Performance baselines

Schedule Management in from PMBOK-08

Schedule Management is one of the most tested areas on the exam, and one of the easiest to mix up. Here’s the flow in 5 slides:

1) Schedule Plan: set the tools and rules
2) Define Activities: break work packages into activities and build the milestone list
3) Check Relationships: FS, SS, SF, FF
4) Verify Dependencies: mandatory, discretionary, internal, external
5) Estimate Durations: analogous, parametric, bottom-up, 3-point
6) Critical Path Method: calculate duration and set the baseline
7) Compress: crashing (more resources, more cost) vs. fast tracking (parallel work, more rework)
8) Optimize Resources: leveling vs. smoothing
9) Change Request: crashing, fast tracking, and leveling need formal approval

Exam tip: Crashing adds cost. Fast tracking adds risk. Know which one the question is asking about.
