Cold weather = freezing pipes.
Tips
-Insulate pipes: Wrap pipes in insulation, fiberglass or foam rubber insulation.
-Open cabinets: Open cabinets under sinks in the kitchen and bathroom to allow warm air to circulate around pipes.
-Seal cracks: Seal any cracks in the foundation or outside walls, stopping airflow from the outside - in.
-Disconnect hoses: Disconnect and drain any hoses outside before freezing weather. If you do not have a frost-free silcock, shut off the water to you exterior faucets.
-Drip faucets: Let faucets drip a little to relieve water pressure, this may keep pipes from bursting. This should be monitored.
**Turn off the water: Identify the main water shutoff valve and make sure everyone in your household knows how to turn it off in case of an emergency** I can't tell you how many homes have their water mains block with stored items.
-Keep heat on: Keeping the heat on and set warmer (70-72°) this can help prevent pipes from freezing or bursting.
-Heat tape: have an electric heat tape installed in problem areas. Heat tape wraps around piping and plugs into a 120v outlet - use caution with extention cords or with overloading your electrical system - consulting with a plumber or electrician if you are unsure.

*use caution with space heaters
*consider an alarm system for your heating and plumbing systems.
*consider shutting off the water and draining your system if you are going on vacation during the colder months.
