Today my mother would’ve been 67 years old. I still can’t believe she’s gone, but I’m uber grateful for the time we had together.

There was never a dull moment in my house; very loud with laughter, love, praise, and jive talk. Every day was so rich and full of core memories. I promise you, we lived ten thousand lives in the 35 years we spent together.

This 7-Up cake recipe is hers, and she blessed so many people with it. It is my honor to continue that legacy.

Whether your establishment is hourly, commission, booth rent, salon suites, or a combination, your leadership skills have to be A1!

You must be able to communicate and lead by example to have people come alongside your vision. Having the right partners, contractors, and professionals working in your salon is key to your success, and it starts with you and your ability to lead.

I strongly encourage all of my clients to collaborate, partner, and connect with others in the beauty space and fellow business owners in general. There’s nothing like having a shared experience with someone and have them cheer you on and advise from their expertise.

is the first black woman Supreme Court Justice nominee and she has long flowing sisterlocks! 🙌🏾💇🏾‍♀️ Locs, braids, and natural styles ARE professional!

Sisterlocks were created by Dr. JoAnna Cornwell, as a means for self-empowerment, cultural expression, and self affirmation.

Dr. Cornwell trademarked this micro-grid locking method in 1993 and launched her empire training and certifying practitioners and providing products as well.

Do you want to know ONE of the top questions I get from salon and spa owners?

I speak with salon and spa owners all over the country, with all types of business models, on every level, and they all want to know…HOW DO I ATTRACT GOOD PROFESSIONALS THAT WANT TO WORK?

The quick answer is the same for attracting clients; give them something they can’t get anywhere else…YOU!

Too many salon and spa owners are worried about their staff leaving, better yet, leaving and taking clients and proprietary information, learning from them and then leaving and launching their own brand, and I know you know the rest, Beauty Queen.

All of these things could happen, but what if I told you, it won’t break you, but only show the power that you have!

You are in the people business FIRST, and investing in your people by providing formal/informal training led by you, the veteran, led by product specialists from the brands you carry, and even traveling out to training hosted by beauty associations, ensure that everyone is delivering a certain standard of service when they encounter your brand.

Whether you are the owner of a commission, hourly, independent, or mixed business, it is important to have some consistencies across the board. It is also important that no matter your business model, that every team member knows and feels attached to the overall vision for your establishment.

So, how do you keep good people? By pouring into them and developing them, then when it is time for them to move on, not only will they not be able to deny your influence in their success, but a happy engaged beauty professional delivers better work!

Some of us ain’t doing too much.

Some of us are preparing our hearts to have the faith 💗, minds to have the fortitude 🧠, and hands and feet to have the discipline to walk 🏃🏾‍♀️into everything that was promised to us.

This month at AIM, we’ve been focusing on elevating ourselves as the expert.

As a beauty professional, you have two main audiences to show your expertise- people who want to receive your services and people who want to learn the business and technical side of what you do. You can choose to develop a strategy and message to speak to both of these groups or one or the other. Your choice!

I’ve outlined a few ways you can share your expertise. Make sure to join my email list to get a breakdown of each strategy.

🥰Challenge- Hosting a challenge around your area of expertise is a great way to help your audience and show your expertise. Here are a few challenge ideas- Healthy Hair Challenge, Clear Skin Challenge, Self-Care Challenge, Learn to Braid

📙Write a Book, Guide, or Pamphlet- Once you memorialize your thoughts into a book, whether hard copy or digital, it serves as a reminder to everyone of your specialty. You want to make sure that you are choosing ONE area of expertise and avoiding the appearance of being a Jack of all Trades and Master of None.

🥗Lunch & Learn- Delivering a detailed session where participants will learn one key thing and have an opportunity to schedule a personal consultation or appointment can be very beneficial in filling your appointment books. You have an audience who has already expressed interest in the topic!
