Woke up to a quiet house this morning. No dogs, for the first time in decades. No one to let out, no one to feed, no water bowls to fill. The infirmary we have been running around here for months is silent; no one needed to be lifted off the floor or fed by hand, no one needed to be cleaned up after a little accident. It's a big change, and a fast one.

Thank God for Samantha's cat, Amethyst, who has taken control of the entire house for the first time. She found the places Sascha used to lay next to me and planted herself there.

We brought Sascha a cheeseburger and fries yesterday afternoon at the vet. She ate the patty and about a dozen fries, and that was all she could do. Letting her go was painful, but full of memories of her well-lived life, her brother Quartz, and a lifetime of animals.

Today is Samantha's 17th birthday, so it's time to put this aside and celebrate. These are the milestones of life, the joys and sorrows that make us human. We will have a lot of fun today with gratitude and a renewed appreciation of why it's so important to find meaning in every day.

The brilliant Bari Weiss deconstructs the so-called "Nobel Lie."

"We’ve written thousands of words in these pages about the crisis of trust we are facing—a crisis gripping our most important institutions, from the legacy press, to our public health officials, to our universities and our government. What’s become clear is the crisis of trust is more accurately described as a crisis of trustworthiness.

In other words, it’s not that Americans have randomly stopped trusting the experts while softening toward the conspiracy theorists. It’s that so many experts have been exposed as partisan and unreliable and stopped deserving our trust. And too many of the ideas dismissed as the province of nuts have turned out to contain more than a kernel of truth.

How do our institutions and experts—who do tend to possess above-average knowledge of important subjects—come back from this?

Stop spinning, stop lying, and stop the condescension."

Must read.

Why do we have a crisis of trust? Because the experts keep lying. Joe Biden is only the latest example.

This week, magnificent Quartz crossed the rainbow bridge and joined the other dogs I’ve been lucky enough to parent over many years.

I’ve been holding him together day by day for the last six months or so, but we finally reached the end of the road. It was time to let him rest with peace and in comfort, before he began to suffer.

Quartz came to me a bit more than a decade ago, when he was almost 4, as a retired stud dog. Our girl Shepherd Sasha was pretty crazy and needed a companion, and I thought a big male would calm her. He did, and they have been pals ever since.

I am heartbroken, but also honored to do this final duty for my wonderful companion with dignity and compassion. Love you, Quartz.
