Woke up to a quiet house this morning. No dogs, for the first time in decades. No one to let out, no one to feed, no water bowls to fill. The infirmary we have been running around here for months is silent; no one needed to be lifted off the floor or fed by hand, no one needed to be cleaned up after a little accident. It's a big change, and a fast one.
Thank God for Samantha's cat, Amethyst, who has taken control of the entire house for the first time. She found the places Sascha used to lay next to me and planted herself there.
We brought Sascha a cheeseburger and fries yesterday afternoon at the vet. She ate the patty and about a dozen fries, and that was all she could do. Letting her go was painful, but full of memories of her well-lived life, her brother Quartz, and a lifetime of animals.
Today is Samantha's 17th birthday, so it's time to put this aside and celebrate. These are the milestones of life, the joys and sorrows that make us human. We will have a lot of fun today with gratitude and a renewed appreciation of why it's so important to find meaning in every day.
