I've been this business for over 20 years. Several years ago the thing for companies to do was to protect their intellectual property by suing those who were using it. Today all the major companies are integrators, they can't afford to be experts in everything anymore. So, in my opinion, the future of IP, except for trolls, is patent repositioning, technology transfer. Understanding what you have and where it needs to be licensed in order for you to make a better, cheeper, product is imperative. I've developed my own software to help with this but there are also other companies that do the same. The trick is understanding how to use the information that you get from each program.
