Pro staffer Scott Kennedy pulled the trigger on his first turkey ever this week to close out Georgia’s season! Here is the story in his own words.
‘Dad and I were out on the family land.We have seen birds all year out here. And what better way to close out the year than with your dad. We hiked out and set up along a creek bottom. We ended up sitting directly under a hen. We watched her for a while before she flew off. We got up and slowly started to ease towards a different area. After spooking a few deer and talking and laughing more than hunting we started to hike home. We had to grab our decoys on the way back and we were being way too casual hiking towards the house after picking them up. Of course we stumbled on a Jake and two hens. They never knew what we were. But they knew we weren’t good. They kept about two hundred yards between us and them. We followed them all the way back to a small field. Where they went through a privet hedge line into the next field. It was at this point that dad and I decided to make a play on the Jake. We had history with this bird. Both of us have had him at the end of our barrels this season. And he has busted both of us on different occasions other than those. So I set up along the edge of the field. Dad went the long way around and stepped out onto the field the turkeys were in. The turkeys turned and ran back towards me. The Jake ran into about 40 yards stopped and presented a shot. I pulled the trigger. The turkey rolled over. I stood up and started to run towards my bird! My bird then stood up and started to run. I shot him again. And continued my run towards him. He also continued his run from me. So, I shot him a third time. This timers the last time right? Wrong! I rummage around in my pocket for a shell and slide it in my smoking and now hot breach, just in time to see this God forsaken bird take to the air! The air! I plant my feet firmly. Draw a bead on the bird. And pull the trigger. He folded up and fell into the nastiest briar patch I’ve seen in recent years. After fishing him out of the briars I hooked him up to my turkey tote from and made the happy hike out with my first turkey!’ @ Trion, Georgia
