Congratulations! You made it through the Building Trust 60-Day Workout. We hope these snippets help you become more aware of YOUR impact on the relationships in your life.
It’s important to remember that no one works these trust-building skills perfectly. But when people recognize sincere efforts to be genuine, reliable and true to your word, they are likely to overlook the occasional mistakes along the way. And, like all workouts, repetition and commitment bring results.

We don’t know – and may never know – why someone has difficulty trusting others. Being let down time and again by self and others can lead someone to a lonely place where the safest road is to trust no one. No matter who we are, we cannot fix this problem. The best approach is to be kind, consistent, and to keep the door open and allow them to feel safe – maybe one day they’ll be ready to come in.

Fearless trust-building does not exist. We often choose to “get along” because of the fear of confrontation, instead of using the problem as an opportunity to build trust. Periodically ask yourself these questions, and use them as a trust-building exercise: What thoughts am I having that I haven’t shared with my spouse/friend/teammates? What do I believe that I’m afraid to say out loud? I haven’t shared my concerns because…? What could help me feel safer in this relationship/group?

Anything that distances us from other people is a direct blow to our ability to connect with them. Genuine trust-builders must come down from self-centered pedestals so we can relate, listen to, and connect with our fellow human beings who are no better or worse than we are.

Being with someone who discloses every thought and feeling as it comes can be refreshing, but scary and exhausting, too. If that’s you, and what you’re about to say is accusatory, scary, insensitive, or could be a trigger, you owe to your partner – and yourself – to pause and rephrase it in a safe manner. It’s not deceptive, it’s caring.

Remember this simple truth: whoever makes the decision is accountable for it. If you make the decision, you are accountable for the consequences and outcomes of it; if someone else makes the decision, they are. Keep other people’s monkeys off your back by trusting them and keeping them accountable for their own decisions.

We notice we’re in a shaky trust situation and our natural flight-or-fight response is twitching, but we feel locked into a pattern of behavior and can’t imagine any other options. You have the key to changing your beliefs about the situation. Try purposely softening your mindset by avoiding texts or emails, competing over who’s right or who’s wrong, asking open-ended questions, or using I-statements. Take a step in the direction of trust.

My group is somewhere on the Trust Ladder, but what rung? Are we at: Polite? Why Are We Here? Bid for Power? Constructive? Esprit de Corps? Building trust between group members equips us to lean on each other so we can get unstuck and get to the level we want to be.

When someone betrays us, the wound is so deep and personal because they already had our trust. After a betrayal, it’s a long road back to trust because we must restore our ability to trust ourselves before we can trust others again. Like physical wounds, emotional wounds often need skilled attention to heal. This type of self-care is crucial to building trust in your relationships.

The credibility of one team member has a direct impact on the credibility of all team members. If trustworthiness truly matters to us, we cannot pretend that a teammate’s – or our own – behavior doesn’t matter. As trust-builders, we have a responsibility to help strengthen our collective credibility by addressing any issues in a respectful, constructive, face-to-face manner.

When we act responsible for others, we try to fix, protect, rescue and control people, and we expect them to live up to our expectations. When we are responsible to others, we show encouragement and empathy, and we expect them to be responsible for themselves and their actions. We can trust and let go. It’s an important difference when your goal is to build trust.

The bigger the difference between who we present to the outside world and what we believe about ourselves, the more likely it is we struggle with trust. We fear that others’ trust in us is a sham because we don’t trust ourselves enough to show them who we really are. Earning our own trust is valuable self-care and the foundation of our best relationships.
