“Literacy is inseparable from opportunity, and opportunity is inseparable from freedom”

Despite Massachusetts scoring at the top of the nation, only ~45% of fourth graders reached reading proficiency in 2019, and white students in Massachusetts were supported to reach reading proficiency at double the rate of Black and Hispanic students 📚(National Assessment of Educational Progress 2019).

Massachusetts children deserve the opportunities that literacy provides, and with the appropriate instruction, nearly all children can learn to read by the end of first grade 🧑‍🏫📖 (Foorman & Al-Otaiba, 2009)
