Leadership is a mindset shift... as Bob Chapman, CEO of Barry Wehmiller explains, "leadership is the stewardship of the lives entrusted to you" and "Management is the manipulation of others for success". Significant difference and what the business environment is calling for to respond to the multitude of challenges we face. Having a clear sense of purpose ( the impact you want to have on the world) and focusing on the well-being of the people who work with and for you will enable them to tackle and creatively solve these challenges.

Through the Barry-Wehmiller story, I want to show people the impact business can have on people’s lives. That business can be a powerful force for good.

Recognition matters!!! People want to know that their contributions make a difference and are important to the team's efforts/goals. Heartfelt recognition like a simple "thank you" or "I really appreciate the hard work and attention you put into this project" can start to transform the energy and engagement of your team. Remember, as humans we are negatively bias.. in fact, research tells us that we need to hear 3-5 positive responses to offset the 1 negative one!

I have learned many lessons in leadership from my experiences as a parent.

Once again Bob Chapman, the CEO of Barry Wehmiller calls out the simple truth.. people need to know that they matter, that what they do is important and appreciated, that they will get what they need in order to be successful for themselves, their teams and their organization. In his article in the International Business Times he cites some amazing statistics that are contributing to the Great Resignation -

- Employees who are "burnt out" (which has increased from 23 - 28% in the last 5years) are not just overworked.. they suffer from unclear expectations and communications, unrealistic workloads, and a lack of managerial suppport.... all of which lead to a 63% more likelihood that they'll call in sick; and 50% or more looking for a new job. We can do better...

The demand for caring leadership – possibly stimulated by "The Great Resignation" – is becoming greater and greater and it is something companies can no longer ignore.

beautiful clip about who and this extraordinary company is about... and so serendipitous that the filmmaker spent many years working at Sesame Street. Just finished watching the documentary about Sesame Street.. and what i came away with was their success is based on the same principles that BW espouses. Be true to your purpose.. for Sesame Street it was about being laser-focused on educating children ages 3-5, especially children who were not "white" and came from disadvantaged economic environments; the importance and impact of play and having fun; using every mistake as an opportunity for experiencing joy and loving every character for who they are including ones who might trigger you like Oscar the Grouch or Grover the cookie monster... Like Sesame Street.. Barry Wehmiller is a picture of what's possible.

If it can happen in an industrial manufacturing plant in Phillips, Wisconsin, couldn’t it happen anywhere?

Fascinating conversation between Bob Chapmand and his son Kyle Chapman about preserving and growing the legacy of an organization so grounded in its purpose - Serving people. Bob talks about how he considers his organization as "builders of people and business, and we're trying to reinforce it. You can run organizations with people and performance and harmony, not one in sacrifice of the other. We're going to spend a lot more time on that.... it's all about "people, purpose and performance", but it all starts with people, not numbers...... and the question and focus is on "do you have a business strategy that gives your people a grounded sense of hope for the future?"

A few weeks ago, Barry-Wehmiller CEO Bob Chapman and Barry-Wehmiller President Kyle Chapman gave a presentation to the St. Louis chapter of the Association for Corporate Growth.
