MYTH: If I have mice, my house must be dirty.

FACT: Even clean, well-maintained homes can have mice.

There's a little truth behind this myth, but it's not quite that simple.

Cluttered or poorly maintained environments can absolutely create ideal conditions for rodents. Accessible food, nesting material, clutter and areas that remain undisturbed give mice more opportunities to feed, hide and reproduce. We've been in homes where those conditions have contributed significantly to a rodent problem.
But we've also found mice in some incredibly clean, well-maintained homes.

Mice aren't necessarily coming inside because a home is dirty. They're looking for the same basic things every animal needs: food, water and shelter. As temperatures cool, a warm home with a small opening can provide exactly what they're looking for.

That's why effective rodent control looks at the entire environment. How are they getting inside? Where are they traveling? What food or shelter is available? Are there conditions around the property helping support the activity?

Sanitation and reducing clutter can be important parts of rodent management, but keeping a clean house doesn't make your home mouse-proof.
Sometimes all it takes is the right opening and a mouse looking for somewhere warm to spend the winter. 🐭

🐭 ASK OLSON'S: How do I know if I have mice?
Seeing a mouse is an obvious sign. But often, mice leave clues behind long before you actually see one.
Droppings, gnaw marks, damaged food packaging, nesting material and scratching sounds in walls or ceilings can all indicate rodent activity.
Here's one you may not know to look for.
See the dark staining around the opening in this photo? As rodents repeatedly travel through the same openings and along the same routes, oils and dirt from their fur can leave dark rub marks on the surfaces they contact.
For a pest management professional, clues like these can help tell the story. Where are the rodents traveling? Where are they getting inside? Where are they finding food, water or shelter?
Effective rodent control isn't just about catching the mouse you see. It's about understanding why it's there and how it got there in the first place.
As temperatures cool, we're already seeing an increase in rodent activity around homes and businesses.

🏠 Sometimes solving the pest problem is only the beginning.

Take a look at the before and after photos from a recent attic restoration completed by our team.

Pest activity can leave behind more than the pest itself. In this attic, there was significant evidence of rodent activity, including droppings throughout the existing insulation.

Once the pest problem has been addressed, Olson's can take the next step with attic restoration. Depending on the conditions, that can include removing affected insulation and debris, cleaning and sanitizing the attic, and installing new insulation.

For this home, we installed T.A.P.® Pest Control Insulation.
T.A.P. stands for Thermal, Acoustical and Pest Control. It's a cellulose insulation that provides thermal and sound-reduction benefits while also incorporating an EPA-registered pesticide designed to control many common household insects.

It's another example of how pest management can go beyond simply controlling what's there today. Sometimes it's about addressing what pests left behind and helping protect the home moving forward.

🐝 Not every insect is a pest. And good pest control shouldn't treat them like one.
These bumblebees were busy working flowers while our team was in the field in late September.

Pollinators play an important role in the ecosystems and agricultural systems we all depend on. Protecting them is one of the reasons responsible pest management is about much more than simply applying pesticides.

At Olson's, we practice Integrated Pest Management, or IPM. That means identifying the pest we're actually trying to control, understanding where it's active, and targeting treatments where they're needed rather than unnecessarily treating everything around it.

When pesticides are necessary, proper product selection, application methods and treatment locations can help reduce unnecessary exposure to pollinators and other non-target organisms.

Sometimes the best pest control decision is knowing where not to treat.
That's better pest management for our customers and the environment around them. 🐝

Congratulations to Dalton Bornholdt on his promotion to Director of Operations!

Dalton has served as one of our Regional Managers and has continued to take on more responsibility across Olson's as we've grown.

In his new role as Director of Operations, Dalton will oversee our field operations and work closely with our regional leadership and PMPs. His focus will be on supporting our people, improving how we operate and making sure we have the structure and accountability needed as Olson's continues to grow.

Dalton knows our operation, knows our people and understands what it takes to serve our customers well. We're excited to have him take on this larger role within Olson's.

A new role for a familiar face at Olson's.

After more than 12 years serving as a Regional Manager, Mark Schilling is transitioning into a new role as Olson's Director of Sales.

Mark has been a big part of Olson's for a long time and has helped lead our team through a lot of growth and change over the years.

As Director of Sales, Mark will focus full time on leading and developing our sales team, strengthening our sales process and helping Olson's continue to grow throughout the communities we serve.

Twelve years in one leadership role is a long time, and we're grateful for everything Mark has done as a Regional Manager. We're looking forward to seeing him take that experience into this next role.

🍂 PEST MYTH

MYTH: The first freeze will take care of the bugs.

FACT: Many of them may already have somewhere to spend the winter.

Take a closer look at the photo. Those are cluster flies inside the attic of a home.

Cluster flies don't wait for winter to arrive before looking for shelter. As days get shorter and temperatures begin to cool, they start seeking protected places to overwinter. That can mean behind siding, inside wall voids, around soffits and, as you can see here, inside attics.

Once they've made it into these protected areas, freezing temperatures outside aren't necessarily going to solve the problem. They can remain hidden for months, sometimes emerging into the living space on warm, sunny days throughout the winter.

That's why timing matters with fall invaders. The goal is to prevent them from getting into the structure before they find their winter hiding place.

If you're waiting for the first freeze to take care of your fall invaders, they may already be one step ahead of you.

🦇 FROM THE FIELD

This is exactly where we like to see them end up.

Our team recently removed this bat from inside a customer's home. After safely getting it outside, we released it near a tree and watched as it quickly climbed its way up to safety.

Bats play an important role in our environment, including consuming huge numbers of insects. We don't want to eliminate bats from the landscape. We just don't want them living inside your home.

When bats are found inside, safely removing the animal is only part of the job. Understanding how bats are getting into the structure and addressing those entry points is what helps prevent the problem from continuing.

As we move further into fall, we're also nearing the end of our seasonal window for completing bat exclusion work.

The best place for a bat is outside doing what bats do best. 🦇

🐀 PEST SPOTLIGHT: Rats

There's a reason rats can be incredibly difficult to control. They're smart.

Rats are cautious, highly adaptable animals with an excellent ability to learn from their environment. They're naturally suspicious of new objects, which means something as simple as placing a new trap or bait station in their path doesn't guarantee they'll immediately investigate it.

They also learn. Rats remember food sources, travel routes and areas where they've encountered danger. In an environment like this grain facility, where food and hiding places can be abundant, that can make an established population especially challenging to control.

That's why effective rat control requires more than putting out a few traps.

Understanding where they're traveling, what they're feeding on, where they're nesting and what conditions are supporting the population is all part of developing an effective control strategy.

We captured this video at a grain facility earlier this summer, but rodents aren't just an agricultural problem. We've been receiving plenty of rodent calls lately as activity picks up around homes and businesses too.

💚 COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS: The Grand Give

What a great night for an even better cause.

Members of our Olson’s team had the opportunity to attend The Grand Give on Friday night in support of the Avera Cancer Institute in Yankton and the continued expansion of rural cancer care throughout our region.

Olson’s was honored to serve as the presenting sponsor this year, but the real story is the incredible support this event brings together for patients, families and cancer care close to home.
