Anticipation of an agreement between the U.S. and Iran helped lift domestic equity markets late last week. All three major indices finished in positive territory, posting nearly identical returns. The S&P 500 gained 0.65%, the DJIA advanced 0.66%, and the Nasdaq led the way with a 0.70% increase. On Wednesday, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh will hold his first official press conference. Investors will be watching closely for any shift in tone from the nation's central bank. The market's interpretation of Chair Warsh's comments could have meaningful implications for both interest rates and investor sentiment. Find out more in this week’s edition of The Profit Margin.

All three major averages retreated after a stronger-than-expected employment report (see chart) raised concerns that the Federal Reserve may be less inclined to lower rates, and potentially more willing to tighten policy, in the second half of the year. The DJIA, after reaching a record high on Thursday, reversed course and finished the week down 0.32%. The S&P 500 posted its worst weekly performance since May, declining 2.59%. The Nasdaq experienced its largest point decline on record Friday and its steepest percentage drop in more than a year, falling 4.68% for the week. With the probability of a Fed rate hike now estimated at roughly 72%, expectations for policy easing continue to fade. This week's CPI and PPI reports will play an important role in shaping market expectations for the Federal Reserve's path forward. Find out more in this week’s edition of The Profit Margin.

“Who Would Believe…”
That despite a months-long conflict involving Iran, continued disruption around the Strait of Hormuz, elevated oil prices, and heightened geopolitical uncertainty, equity markets would still be trading near all-time highs? Profit growth has continued to surprise to the upside, particularly in industries tied to artificial intelligence, semiconductor demand, data center construction, power infrastructure, and industrial services. Last week, all three major U.S. equity averages advanced. The DJIA reached a record high during the week and finished up 2.13%. The S&P 500, which has now gained approximately 3.7% in May alone, rallied 0.88% and is currently on its longest winning streak since 2023, at eight consecutive weeks. The Nasdaq, the year-to-date performance leader, brought up the rear, but still posted a gain of 0.45% for the week. This week, investors will receive the PCE Index for April. Analysts expect the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge to rise 0.3% for the month and 3.4% on a year-over-year basis. Historically, during midterm election years, the S&P 500 has declined an average of 2.8% in the period of April through September. Find out more in this week’s edition of The Profit Margin.

While Friday was a difficult session for equity investors, weekly performance was relatively muted overall. All three major indices finished slightly lower on the week. The Nasdaq, snapping a six-week winning streak, declined 0.08%, while the S&P 500 and DJIA fell 0.13% and 0.17%, respectively. Producer prices, often viewed as a leading indicator for consumer inflation, climbed to an annualized rate near 6%. These inflation readings will make it more difficult for the Federal Reserve to pursue lower interest rates and looser monetary policy. Kevin Warsh, now confirmed as Fed Chair, assumes leadership of the central bank during an increasingly uncertain economic environment. This week’s trading action will likely be dominated by the release of the FOMC meeting minutes and Nvidia’s earnings report. Find out more in this week’s edition of The Profit Margin.
