“Kickoff”

The NFL season has come to define fall in America: a season of preparation, strategy and, when everything goes according to plan, flawless ex*****on. This year, however, football may have to compete with the midterm elections for our attention. Over the coming months, politicians, strategists, and pollsters will debate taxes, government spending, interest rates, trade, and nearly every other issue that can affect the economy and financial markets. For seasoned investors, last week had the feel of the “summer doldrums.” Earnings season continued, with major retailers pointing to a generally healthy consumer. However, volatility in the technology sector, coupled with notable moves in the bond market, pushed equity prices lower. All three major U.S. equity averages finished the week in the red. For the first time in a long time, investors seemed more interested in the machinations of the bond market than the stock market. This came as total U.S. federal debt topped $40 trillion and long-term Treasury yields reached levels not seen in nearly two decades. Find out more in this week’s edition of The Profit Margin.

Statistic of the Week According to research from Goldman Sachs, artificial intelligence has reduced U.S. payroll growth by approximately 16,000 jobs per month, contributing to an unemployment rate roughly 0.1% higher than it otherwise would be. While the weekly returns for the major domestic equity indices appeared relatively flat, volatility remained elevated throughout the week. The major averages delivered mixed results. The DJIA declined 0.56%, the Nasdaq gained 0.14%, and the S&P 500 rose 0.56%. Inflation data and the health of the consumer remain key areas of focus for investors. Last week’s CPI and PPI reports showed inflation moderating in July, although higher energy prices in August could push the next readings higher. Domestic equity markets surged last week on hopes for a resolution to the conflict with Iran, continued strength in corporate earnings, and a “bad-news-is-good-news” employment report. All three major U.S. averages finished the week in the black. The Nasdaq led the pack, rallying 5.19%, followed by the S&P 500, which rose 3.58%, and the DJIA, which gained 2.96%. Both the Dow and S&P 500 reached record highs during the week. Earnings growth has been so strong that the closely watched price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple has actually declined year to date, even as equity prices have moved higher. Find out more in this week’s edition of The Profit Margin.

Multiple asset classes experienced elevated volatility last week as investors digested a heavy corporate earnings calendar, fresh inflation data, and the FOMC meeting announcement. Although domestic equity markets ultimately finished higher, trading was marked by sharp swings in both directions. The Nasdaq led the major indices, gaining 1.59%, while the S&P 500 rose 1.05% and the DJIA advanced 1.04%. The Fed also appears to remain more focused on the inflation side of its dual mandate than on the labor market, with several governors noting that inflation has remained elevated for too long. As a result, this week's employment report will be particularly important. Find out more in this week’s edition of The Profit Margin.
