I got into this because of a coach who saw something in me before I saw it in myself

I was a high school cross country runner
Not the fastest
Not the most talented

But my coach-without fanfare without explanation-named me a team captain

Not because of my times
Because of my work ethic
Because of the way I showed up every single day regardless of the result

The moment didn’t just shape how I compete
It shaped how I coach
It’s the reason KHP Coaching exists

I know what it feels like to be doubted
I know what it feels like to doubt yourself
And I know - from the inside out - what it takes to fight through it anyway

The experience is not a footnote in my story
It is the foundation of everything I teach

Some coaches chase trophies.
Scotty Watt chased people.
Literally.

He would roll down the windows of his car and drive right beside us for miles, bagpipe music blasting, while we ran.

That’s the image I want you to have of him. An old cross country coach, windows down, Scottish music filling the street, keeping pace with a bunch of tired high school kids who were probably too exhausted to even laugh about it.

Yesterday, Scotty Watt was inducted into the Delone Catholic Hall of Honor. And that image is exactly why he deserved every second of it.

Retired Lt. Colonel.
Legion of Merit recipient.
Founding head coach of Delone Catholic’s cross country program.
Builder of division champions, district champions, and state champions.

But ask any athlete who ran for him what they remember; it won’t be a race.

It’ll be the bagpipes.

It’ll be the cross country camps in the middle of the summer sharing a meal by the campfire.

It’ll be the moment he believed in them before they believed in themselves.

He didn’t coach split times.
He coached people.

He built a culture so strong that his athletes carry it with them decades after they’ve crossed their last finish line.

Men like Scotty don’t do it for the recognition.

They do it because they genuinely love the people standing in front of them.

That’s a rare gift.
And it deserves to be celebrated.

Congratulations, Coach Watt.
