Talk about them BONES 🦴🦴🦴
Did you know your thyroid has 4 friend glands called the parathyroid glands? These little guys have an awful lot to do with your BONES!
If your parathyroid is overworking (hyperparathyroidism)- it can really cause some bone problems!
The Parathyroid releases parathyroid hormone- this hormone does 3 big things:
1.) Tells the kidneys to reabsorb calcium, excrete phosphorus, and activate vitamin D (vitamin D is needed for your body to absorb calcium!)
2.) The Parathyroid tells little cells (osteoclasts) to break down bone to release that calcium.
3.) Parathyroid hormone tells the small intestine to work harder and absorb more calcium from food.
Primary causes of hyperparathyroidism (problems with the parathyroid itself) are non-cancerous growths, cancerous growths, and hyperplasia (overgrowth) of the gland.
Other causes are chronic kidney failure, low calcium, and vitamin D deficiencies.
Because the parathyroid impacts calcium imbalances, nurses must watch vital sings, the EKG, urine samples, calcium values, phosphorus values, intake and outputs, and encourage fluids.
