🗣 "Sparring with Sonny Liston is the most dangerous thing that I ever did in my entire life. No matter what I tried against him, it was me who had to revert back to boxing. Nobody made me box like Sonny Liston did and that happened every time we worked together.

Hall of Famer and one of the best heavyweights of the early 20th century, Joe Jeanette died in the North Hudson Hospital in Weehawken, New Jersey in 1958. He was 78 years old.

Denied by the cruel colour bar of the time, Jeanette would fight Jack Johnson ten times and Sam Langford 14 times. He said that Langford was the "toughest of them all."

"Sam would have been the champion any time Johnson had given him a fight," he declared. "But Johnson wouldn't have any of us after he got the title."

He also fought Battling Jim Johnson 10 times, Sam McVea 5 times and Harry Wills 3 times.

Jeannette had a street named after him in Union City. Jeannette Street is located between Summit Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard.

On April 17, 2009, the 100th anniversary of Jeannette's 49th-round knockout of Sam McVea, a historical marker was dedicated where Jeannette's former residence and gym once stood. It is Union City's first historical marker.
