After many years, Raeanna and I have decided to close the chapter on RR Poet Wines.

What began in 2009 with the planting of PineBrake Vineyard in the Rattlesnake Hills AVA turned into one of the most meaningful adventures of our lives. Since our first vintage in 2019, we’ve had the privilege of sharing these wines with so many of you — at events, through our mailing list, and here on social media.

Over the past several weeks, most of the remaining bottles were purchased by our list members. A very small amount of wine is still available, at steep discounts, and once it’s gone, RR Poet will officially come to an end.

If you’ve ever thought about trying our wines, this is truly the last opportunity.

“The 2021 Allusion is a full-bodied, richly textured wine with a dense, complex core. It has beautifully delineated aromatics of blackberry, blueberry, dark plum, pencil lead, gravel, cedar, eucalyptus, and wild mint. The wine is well structured with a juicy succulence and lavishly opulent fruit character. The silky, refined tannins frame precisely delineated flavors of blackberry, cassis, black plum, tar, mint, vanilla, dark chocolate, and espresso. There are also gentle nuances of violets, Asian spice, and wild sage. The refreshing acidity provides a high-toned lift on the long, vibrant finish which resonates with notes of violets, gravel, and cassis. Properly cellared, the wine should reach maturity in 8-10 years and provide excellent drinking for 20+ years.”

Explore “The Hills” 🌄🍇 Nestled in the heart of the Yakima Valley, our PineBrake Vineyard benefits from the very distinctive terroir of the Rattlesnake Hills AVA, most notably set apart from other winegrowing regions by its completely unique bedrock formation, dubbed the “Ellensburg Formation,” which is characterized by ancient (Miocene era) river rock and sandstone conglomerates that impart a distinctive minerality to our wines. This is in stark contrast to the vast majority of Washington State wines, which are predominantly grown in soils underlain by basaltic bedrock formations. Spotted on the star-studded wine list at Russell's: RR Poet ‘Alliteration’ 2019! This Cabernet-led blend scored 96 points with International Wine Report, and it is the perfect choice for decadent dishes, such as Russell’s fillet mignon, duck Nicault, or for savoring by itself at the bar. Only 6 barrels produced.

“An intoxicating blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Merlot that is sultry and incredibly beautiful in every way. With a nose of ripe mountain blackberry, cassis, freshly ground coffee, tar, and a touch of to***co, I could spend hours smelling the wine and watching it evolve. The palate is fresh and on point with additional flavors of black plum, cinnamon stick, vanilla bean with a hint of earthiness, and iron ore. Ample acidity, lovely chalky tannins, a full-body, and a wonderfully fruity and earthy finish complete the wine. Highly recommended. 96/100” – Jeremy Young, International Wine Report

Walking the sloping vine rows at PineBrake Vineyard, you can feel all of the qualities that make this Rattlesnake Hills AVA terroir extraordinary. Perched high in Washington’s Yakima Valley, at 1,2000ft to be exact, our own-rooted Bordeaux varietals benefit from cooler conditions, especially at nighttime, which lock in the bright fruit, delicate aromas and firm acidity that define RR Poet wines.

Beneath your feet, you can feel the windblown loess soils, overlaying a deep layer of gravelly, cobblestone bedrock. Known as the Ellensburg Formation, and unique to this area, this geological feature is low-vigor and well-drained, encouraging the vines to dive deep in search of water and nutrients. The result is lower yields of more concentrated fruit, layered with the unique characteristics of this ancient land.

“The combination of elevation, soil type, and varied slope aspects—not to mention the incredible views from one of the highest spots in the Yakima Valley growing region—make PineBrake Vineyard a truly unique and special place,” says Winegrower Jeremy Porter.

It’s a dog’s life in the vineyard…High in the Rattlesnake Hills, PineBrake vineyard is well into its growing season, as is our wine pup, Rocco. On his way to becoming a fully fledged member of the vineyard team, Rocco has been put through his paces up and down the sloping vine rows, ready to assist with clearing any stray sticks, chasing small pests, or generally boosting morale in all weathers. Where would we be without a winegrower’s best friend?
