Ruby Magdalena Vineyards

Ruby Magdalena Vineyards We are an intimate Vineyard, Winery, & Tasting Room. Featuring Spanish grape varieties in the Rattlesnake Hills AVA, Yakima Valley, Washington State ph.

Ruby Magdalena Vineyards is a tiny vineyard and winery owned and operated by Marty and Ryan Johnson. It is located in the Rattlesnake Hills AVA in Washington State. We are located about four miles north of the town of Zillah at 855 Gilbert Road. We carefully craft our wines using only grapes from our 1¼ acre vineyard. Our annual output is limited to less than 350 cases. Small lot production allows

us to pay close attention to every detail of craftsmanship. We raise all of our own grapes, produce, bottle, and distribute our wines ourselves. Because our desire is to create wines from only estate grapes, we’ve limited production to four wines
We are available for vineyard tours, (individuals or small groups welcome) by appointment only. Please feel free to call or message us to schedule a visit. (509) 930-2111

Let the leaf pulling begin!
We've got berries! That means it's time to start removing leaves from the fruiting zone on the east side of the plants. Leaf removal is all done by hand here and is an important management technique. It helps promote air circulation which helps prevent mildew and other pathogens from getting established. It allows sunlight to strike the young fruit which improves phenolic ripening. It also allows sunlight to stimulate the bud wood at the base of the spurs which improves next years growth. Another benefit is that it allows any sprays that we need to apply can pe*****te the canopy more easily improving effectiveness. And, it's fun to hear the "Pop, Pop, Pop" as you work your way through the vineyard rows. We'll pull leaves on the west side of the rows in the late summer to allow the sun to affect those grapes without subjecting them to the much hotter afternoon sun during the midsummer weeks.
If you're interested in learning more, come visit us and ask just one question and Marty will talk your ears (and possibly leaves) off for an hour or more!
You can schedule a vineyard tour on our website. Just Google "Ruby Magdalena Vineyards" and visit the website!

...and then there's this.
Sometime this past weekend, our mailbox post was hit, most likely by a Semi Truck (54' refrigerated trailer, carrying a load of fresh cherries). This is an eight inch steel well casing set in a concrete footing. You can see where the force of the blow uplifted the soil/gravel in the roadway. Sometimes the fruit trucks don't enter this turn wide enough and clip the railroad ties alongside the right of way. This time was a bit more extreme. We're contemplating placing about five Eco-Blocks along our property at this corner. Eco blocks are 6' long by 2' wide by 2' high concrete blocks that weigh about 3,500 pounds.

Hey Zirkle Fruit Company , is one of your trailers looking a bit scratched up on the left side? Fruit has been coming off property on Gilbert Road and Bliss Road north of Zillah.

Stupid people do stupid things.
Don't do stupid things...

EDIT: 6/16 - As of 8:35 this morning, the fire is over 24,058 acres, per National Interagency Fire Center via the Watch Duty app.

EDIT: 6/15 - As of 4:35 today, the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center reports that the fire has grown to 18,625 acres.

The Tule Fire, south of Toppen*sh Washington has grown to over 5,000 acres. Reports say it is a human caused event. Yesterday we watched this monster grow from 10 acres at 1:18 pm, to 3,000 acres by 3:58 pm, and stood at 5,000 acres by 12:25 am early this morning with currently 0% containment. Highway 97 between Toppen*sh and Goldendale was closed as of this morning with the air quality in the Columbia George worsening quickly. Also uncontained in the area, complicating matters are the The Juniper Dunes Fire (3,627 acres, 0% contained) and the Highway 730/Twin Sisters Fire (3,638 acres, 0% contained). Resources have been stretched thin, affecting response time and capability. Stay safe out there and please be careful.

Ever made a frittata?
This Italian spin on an omelet or quiche is a hit here at our home. Sautéed goodies with an egg batter poured over them on the stove top, then baked in the oven until set and golden brown. We always insist on including some sort of leftover pasta for a bit more body and loads of veggies. Here we also used leftover roast beef, deli sliced ham, and leftover li'l smokies.
So good! and even better when paired with a beautiful sparkling wine like this Celebration Cuvée from Treveri Cellars here in the Yakima Valley.
There are many recipes online for frittatas, and the Sparkling wine can be ordered online from trevericellars.com or if you're in the area, stop in and taste some of their sparkling wines!

We're trying something new...
We love the subtle flavor of garlic scapes, so we're gonna try mincing and freeze drying them. They add a delicate garlic flavor and aroma to salads, roasts, mased potatoes and more. And we'll soon be able to add the flavor to many more things by grinding up the freeze dried scapes into powder for compound butter, au jus, bone broth, etc.
Savory flavor doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. Just like our passionately hand crafted wines. Smooth, subtle and complex, come taste for yourself at The Cork & Pullet wine pub. Marty will help with suggestions for food and wine pairing and tips for maximum enjoyment. ¡Salud!

Visual Perception.
The first and probably most underrated evaluation that one does when encountering a glass of wine. There is a lot that the color, clarity, and concentration of the visual aspect of a wine can tell us. Suggestions about the age, the climate (terroir?), types and persistence of flavors, as well as winemaking style and technique can all be ascertained by studying the appearance of the wine.
Marty and his good friend Jerry (Ford) spent much of the day last Monday working on an integrated upthrust lighting setup in our tasting bar at the Cork & Pullet. Incorporating two COB LED adjustable light strips into a reflective housing in the wooden table itself. Covered by two layers of tempered glass, one with a diffusing glue chip pattern, the light is softly dispersed for comfortable evaluation and enjoyment of the wine's color and clarity.
We all celebrated the nearly complete installation with a big ol' "Death by Pizza" from Westside Pizza, paired with a glass of Malbec from Bunnell Family Cellar in Prosser, WA. The Pizza (one of our favorites) and the wine were amazing, and the lighting was more incredible than we had hoped for. Please, if you are interested in learning about winegrowing or anything wine related, stop in and just get Marty started talking. He'll definitely answer your questions as best he can and possibly talk so much you'll appreciate a bit of a drink!
The Cork & Pullet tasting pub at Ruby Magdalena Vineyards, is open Thursday through Monday from noon until 5:00pm (Pacific time) and is located at:

The mystery of "The Pink Flamingo..."
We were gifted this amazingly adorable plastic pink flamingo this past weekend. We're not sure who blessed us with this little friend, but we sure do appreciate the company! We've put these beautiful flower baskets in front of our ADA restrooms to pretty them up a bit, but this little bird is definitely the cherry on top! There are so many quirky objets d'intérêt (objects of interest...duh) in our tasting pub to keep our visitors occupied while contemplating our wines. Marty is also pretty good at keeping our customers entertained and educated, but definitely not as cute as the Pink Flamingo. Stop by and visit, Thursday through Monday from noon to 5:00 pm.

Irrigation water is back on!
After eleven days without irrigation, everyone has had a good drink and the vineyard and roses are looking great! The roses got hit pretty hard and there was considerable heat damage (especially to the delicate white roses), but that is their job. As an indicator species, they show us what is happening in the vineyard and they let us know before the less sensitive grapevines are affected. Fruit set is looking good and the whole place is set for an amazing season. Come out and take a walk up to the vineyard, admire the roses and enjoy a bit of wine. Weather is looking favorable with daytime high temps should be a moderate and sunny 68°F - 75°F.
We're open Thursday through Monday, noon to five.
