What’s REAL ORGANIC?
It is an organization we pay to be in to certify our farm meets higher standards than USDA ORGANIC.
We don’t think hydroponics can be considered organic, only in the USA. Campaign contributions from Big Ag?
We think cattle should be on pasture not packed into feedlots.
As the biggest consumer of our farm products I want it to meet the highest standards.
We sell wine and beef.

Today’s Sound of Summer
A Drought Emergency Well in operation. With the lack of snow and runoff from the mountains, these 800-2,000 foot deep wells pulling from the Wanapum Aquifer are permitted for us.
Us little guys can’t afford a $500,000 well. We have to get really good at conservation. Vineyards use the least water of any cultivated crop.

Today’s Sign of Summer
Bloom is past midway, good weather so high set of flowers to fruit.
So far good conditions, now just 100+ days for ?
Our rigorous shoot thinning and leaf pulling are what has enabled us to avoid pesticides for 13 years.
Zero Pesticides, ingredient labeled, satisfaction guaranteed
What else do you want? Free delivery? Yeah we do that too.

Water, water, water
For irrigated farms in a desert valley it is truly the Life Blood.
Even though vineyards use very little water compared to any other crop we do need some and the timing can be crucial.
Our vineyard is fine, won’t need irrigation for weeks. Pastures use more and don’t do well with a month without water at this time.
It comes back tomorrow!

Spring sometimes brings a thunderstorm! Hopefully some rainfall.

Bloom time, one of the bench marks of the season.
It overlaps with shoot thinning to open up the canopy to sunlight and eliminate the cool shady places the pests like.
The complete shutdown of our irrigation system at this time isn’t an issue. We like to have a little lack of moisture during fruit set.
We don’t want enormous clusters of tightly packed large berries.
We want moderate clusters, loose clusters with good air and light, small, intense flavored berries.
We usually don’t irrigate till July.
The pastures are a different story. They don’t do well with no moisture for a month plus. The rationing means it takes 24 days to get water to every section after it comes back on. So it’s over a month without irrigation. We have had to send half the cattle we feed in the summer back home.
We can only feed half the cattle with half the water. Drought is why beef is high, no feed for stock for several years.

Bike to Work Day!?
That’s everyday here. My ATV is an e assist fat tire bike. First thing every day is a 4-6 mile tour of the neighborhood for the dogs. The bike does about 100 miles a week.
Then back to the farm with chores. With 7.6 kilometers of vineyard row it saves a lot of steps. I still get in 40 miles a week on foot!

Carbon
Carbon Tax
Carbon sequestration
Agriculture has been a big Carbon Footprint. It shouldn’t. If we took the couple billion dollars of Carbon Tax money generated and developed programs to reward farmers for sequestration.
The burning of removed orchards and vineyards to ash releases the carbon in wood to the atmosphere.
Chipping and returning to the soil holds it for years. Turning it into charcoal for Biochar can hold it for centuries. Both improve the soil.

The winter annuals have gone to seed and died off. Now they are a fire hazard and get seeds in clothing. I mow very short to make it more pleasant.
When we start irrigating in a few weeks we will start getting summer annuals like kocia, amaranth, and the perennials will perk back up.

Drought year number4.
Fortunately grapes use little water, V vinifera is native to areas with long, warm, dry summers.
But our little farm isn’t just vineyard.
We have 12 acres of pasture which when water is abundant, provides excellent grazing for about 50,000 lbs of livestock.
At half water we can’t support that. We can irrigate 2” once a month instead of 2” every 14-20 days. We can only provide high quality pasture to half as many animals.
Why is beef so high?
Much of the country has been precipitation deficient for years. The head count got low, beef was fairly low four years ago as farmers decreased herd size.
Now you are bidding for the current small crop. We are paying double from four years ago to buy a cow to stock our pastures.
