Staking a Claim in the Future: Why USVI Youth Deserve a "Piece of the Rock"

We’ve all heard the standard political playbook. Every election cycle, leaders stand behind podiums, look into the cameras, and declare that our young people are "the future" and "our most valuable resource."

But let’s be entirely honest: if you look at the actions of our government, do those words ring true? Or does it just sound like the same old gift of gab?

Talk is cheap. Rent is not. Land is definitely not. When a young Virgin Islander graduates, looks at the local job market, looks at the cost of living, and realizes they are priced out of the very islands they call home, that isn't a failure of ambition—it's a failure of policy. Lip service won't build a life, and empty rhetoric won't secure a future.

The Team of Donastorg/Nelson is ready to move past the talk. We are ready to roll out a vision that our young people can actually relate to and, more importantly, anchor themselves to. It starts with real, tangible actions and a groundbreaking concept: The Youth Land Bank.

What is the Youth Land Bank?

We believe in putting our young people first and foremost. That means giving them a literal stake in this territory—a "piece of the rock" to build on, invest in, and pass down.

The Youth Land Bank is a comprehensive, structured pipeline designed to transition our young adults from students to stable, property-owning pillars of our community.

Here is exactly how the program is built to work:

* A Piece of the Rock: Eligible young Virgin Islanders will have the opportunity to secure a parcel of land—aiming for up to an acre of property—specifically designated for community development and residential growth.

* Job & Workforce Positioning: Land is only the foundation. Our targeted support programs will actively place participants in positions to secure stable, upwardly mobile employment, ensuring they have the financial baseline to sustain an investment.

* Financial & Loan Access: We will bridge the gap between local financial institutions and our youth, providing the structural backing, credit-building education, and program-supported loan access needed to finance a first home.

* Wraparound Support: From blueprint to breaking ground, the program will offer technical assistance, help navigate the permitting process, and provide financial counseling so our youth are never left to figure it out alone.

Moving Past the Same Old Rhetoric

For too long, our greatest export has been our talent. We watch our brightest minds leave for the mainland because the barriers to success here at home feel insurmountable.

"True empowerment isn’t a speech; it’s an asset. By ensuring our youth can own land, secure a home, and build a career right here, we aren't just telling them they matter—we are anchoring them to our future."

The Donastorg/Nelson vision is about breaking the cycle of the "same ole, same ole." We are focused on creating tangible equity for the next generation. If we want our young people to invest their talents, their families, and their futures in the United States Virgin Islands, we have to give them something real to invest in.

No more lip service. No more delays. It’s time for real, structural change that puts our youth where they belong: at the absolute forefront of our priorities.

We are ready to roll. Are you ready to build?

From the USVI to Nova Nation: A Championship Journey, Interrupted

By Adlah Foncie Donastorg, Jr.

My connection to Villanova University is a source of immense pride. It’s a place where I not only honed my professional skills through the Master’s in Public Administration program—a journey I began in 2016—but also witnessed the quiet impact of exceptional individuals, making our shared connection to a historic moment even more profound.

That 2016 acceptance was pivotal. At the time, I was also incredibly active, serving as Executive Director for the Democratic Party. Attending the Democratic Convention that summer, I crossed paths with many impressive figures. Yet, one person stood out with a unique, enduring impression: a young Jalen Brunson.

I remember it vividly. I was on the beautiful Villanova campus, in the university bookstore, doing what every new student does—stocking up on textbooks and picking out the perfect school t-shirt to announce my arrival as a 'Villanovan.' I bumped into a young man who was so humble, so mild-mannered, and so incredibly focused on what he was doing that it left an indelible impression on me. He wasn't just the rising star of the basketball team; he was a respectful peer, a "phenom" who was approachable and authentically kind. It was a brief, simple interaction, but I knew I’d met someone truly special.

The following year, 2017, was a test. Back home in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Hurricanes Irma and Maria arrived, one after another, as major category hurricanes. Their absolute power caused catastrophic damage. The immediate aftermath was a long struggle, to say the least. It seriously interrupted my study schedule and ability to keep up with coursework. For a very long time, attending any of our season games—the very games Jalen and his teammates were dominating—was impossible. It was a deeply frustrating period, feeling so connected to a "Nova" that was so physically far away.

We know how Jalen’s Villanova story continued, achieving significant individual milestones, being decorated, and recognized as a true leader.

Fast-forward to today, and who could have predicted the next chapter? For "long-story-short" reasons, the basketball world is celebrating not just one, but three incredible Villanova talents shining on the legendary New York Knicks team: Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, and Mikal Bridges.

New York is a city that loves its basketball and was absolutely starving for a championship. It’s been a decades-long wait. But this specific trio, with their collective "Nova" spirit—resilience, teamwork, and that unshakeable blue-and-white DNA—delivered.

While Jalen had his numerous previous achievements, capturing the coveted 2026 NBA Finals Championship was the missing piece, not only for the Knicks but for this particular group of fellow Wildcats. They delivered a championship to a city that needed it most, solidifying their legacy in the heart of basketball history.

So, from a fellow Villanovian, let me just say this:

Congratulations to the New York Knicks on capturing the 2026 NBA Finals Championship! And congratulations to Jalen, Josh, and Mikal. Your story, and the story of how you brought a championship to a city, is prolific, and I am proud to share our common 'V' connection.

A Voice of the Virgin Islands: A Tribute to Samuel W. Topp

The collective heart of the Virgin Islands is heavy today as we mourn the passing of a true icon, Samuel W. Topp. For decades, Sam was not just a radio host; he was the comforting cadence of our mornings, the intellectual anchor of our afternoons, and the soulful rhythm that connected our islands.

To know Sam Topp, or simply to listen to him, was to understand the power of a truly captivating voice. It was a voice rich with warmth, depth, and an undeniable authority—a unique instrument that resonated deeply across every hillside, valley, and shore of our territory. When Sam spoke, Virgin Islanders listened. He possessed the rare ability to enlighten the public, breaking down complex issues with clarity and wisdom, while always elevating the conversation.

Beyond the microphone, Sam’s life was a masterclass in philanthropy and community service. He didn't just comment on the community; he actively built it up, pouring his time, energy, and heart into enriching others' lives.

He was also a man who carried a deep love for music, particularly the soulful singers who poured their truths into song. In many ways, Sam lived his life like those classic tracks—with passion, authenticity, and a rhythm that moved people.

"His voice was the soundtrack of our resilience, and his life was a testament to community service."

Donastorg/Positive Nelson extend our deepest, most heartfelt condolences to Sam’s family, loved ones, and wide circle of friends.

Sam Topp will be sorely missed, but his echo will never fade from the airwaves of our memory. As we grieve this immense loss, let us also celebrate and appreciate the years of dedication he gifted to us. The best way to honor his legacy is to carry forward his commitment to enlightening the public, serving our neighbors, and loving these Virgin Islands as deeply as he did.

Rest in peace and power, Sam. Your voice remains forever etched in the soul of the territory. Love always!

Every once in a while, a song transcends the airwaves to become a cultural movement. That is exactly what is happening with "Not Afraid."

While the track offers a deeply profound, prolific reflection on the specific challenges facing the United States Virgin Islands, its core message has sparked a universal fire—especially among young people.

"Not Afraid" doesn’t sugarcoat reality. It steps directly into the light, beautifully articulating the systemic, economic, and social hurdles facing the Virgin Islands. For locals, the lyrics are a validating, honest mirror; for the rest of the world, they are a masterclass in storytelling. We owe immense appreciation to the artists for putting such heavy, necessary truths into words.

Today’s younger generation has a low tolerance for inauthenticity. They don't want empty platitudes; they want truth. "Not Afraid" gives them exactly that. It acknowledges fear and systemic obstacles, but hands them a blueprint for courage, perfectly capturing the youthful spirit of defiance and hope.

"It shifts the narrative from ‘Look at what we are up against’ to ‘Look at who we are.’"

How does a song rooted in the USVI experience become a universal phenomenon? Because pain, hope, and courage speak the same language everywhere. Whether you are walking the streets of St. Thomas/St. John and St. Croix, or navigating life in an inner city thousands of miles away, the human condition remains the same. Virgin Islanders here and there are Virgin Islanders everywhere.

"Not Afraid" is more than a track on a playlist; it is a lifeline. It is a compelling snapshot of the USVI's current fight. Turn the volume up, absorb the words, and find your own courage in the beat.

We are Donastorg/Nelson.

A Message to Our Community: People First, Always

To our fellow Virgin Islanders,

In moments of hardship, community isn’t just a word—it is a responsibility.

Right now, our islands are navigating a deeply challenging period. The recent, unfortunate power outages have left many of our neighbors dealing with devastating losses, from ruined electronic devices to the breakdown of essential appliances like stoves and refrigerators. For so many families, these aren't just inconveniences; they represent irreparable damage to their daily lives, security, and peace of mind.

In the true spirit of solidarity and deep concern for our people, Positive and I have decided to postpone our upcoming Meet and Greet by one week. As we continue to listen to and address the concerns of Virgin Islanders, we cannot, in good conscience, celebrate while so many are hurting. Our hearts and our hands must be intimately involved in the well-being of our residents. Over the next week, our focus will shift entirely toward being proactive, stepping up to assist those who have suffered losses, and ensuring that the most vulnerable among us are not left behind. The necessity of protecting and caring for our elderly, our struggling families, and our neighbors right now cannot be overstated.

True leadership and community spirit mean showing up when it matters most. We are pausing our event so we can show up for you.

Thank you for your understanding, your resilience, and your continued support. We will see you next week with a newly rescheduled date. Until then, please look out for one another.

"The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members."

With strength and unity,

DONASTORG/NELSON

Today, as the United States Virgin Islands joins the nation in sacred remembrance, we stand united and resolute to honor a debt that transcends time. We remember with unwavering gratitude the sons and daughters of these islands—brave men and women who gazed into the face of danger, responded to the call of duty, and gave their lives so that the flame of freedom would burn ever brighter for us all.

To give one’s life so that generations of Virgin Islanders may live in liberty is the highest form of love and patriotism. Every right we cherish, every freedom we celebrate, and the peace that blesses our islands were secured by the courage and sacrifice of our fallen heroes. They gave their tomorrows so we could embrace our todays, and their legacy lives on in the spirit and promise of these Virgin Islands.
