We are seeing increasing damage to shell stone and coral stone caused directly by routine pool service.

The shell stone in this photo shows heavy etching and surface failure — caused not by weather, not by wear — but by chemical attack.

What's Happening?

These stones are calcareous (high in calcium carbonate). When exposed to pool chemicals, they react:

Chlorine and shock break down the surface. This isn’t staining — it’s chemical erosion as seen in this formula: CaCO3 + 2HClO → Ca(ClO)2 + CO2 + H2O

What To Do?

* Keep pool chemicals off stone surfaces.
* Use temporary barriers during chemical dosing.
* Maintain stable pH and chlorine levels.

Shell stone and coral stone are beautiful — but chemically sensitive. Educate and elevate. Prevention first. Restoration second.
