Over 20 years in elite football has given me the opportunity to work in some incredible environments — across the Premier League, EFL and international football.

But the next chapter is different.

Over the last few years, my focus has increasingly turned towards Southeast Asia and the huge potential I see here — in clubs, federations, coaches and individual players.

Performance 47 is built around a simple idea:
Taking the experience, knowledge and lessons I've gained throughout my career and making them accessible in ways that can support the development of performance in this region.
Whether that's working with clubs and federations, supporting coaches and performance staff, or providing individual players with access to high-level performance coaching.
This isn't about bringing a one-size-fits-all model from somewhere else.
It's about elite experience, local context and developing performance together.

This is the next chapter.

🇬🇧For players to thrive in the physical demands of modern elite football - training needs to be based on key principles that underpin exercise selection and progressions!

3 key principles that underpin our work with clubs, federations, academies and individual players’ are:

1)SPECIFICITY -‘Everything we do must relate back to the game’

2)PROGRESSIVE OVERLOAD - ‘Build capability and durability through progressive increases in volume, intensity and density.

3)VARIABILITY - ‘Expose Players to a wide variety of physical challenges and respect the process of adaptation by appropriate variation in load.

🇻🇳Để đáp ứng được những yêu cầu khắt khe về thể chất trong bóng đá đỉnh cao hiện đại, quá trình tập luyện cần dựa trên các nguyên tắc cốt lõi làm nền tảng cho việc lựa chọn bài tập và lộ trình phát triển!

3 nguyên tắc then chốt định hướng công việc của chúng tôi khi hợp tác với các câu lạc bộ, liên đoàn, học viện và cầu thủ cá nhân bao gồm:

1) TÍNH ĐẶC THÙ – “Mọi hoạt động tập luyện đều phải gắn liền với thực tế thi đấu.”

2) TĂNG DẦN CƯỜNG ĐỘ (PROGRESSIVE OVERLOAD) – “Xây dựng năng lực và sự bền bỉ thông qua việc tăng dần khối lượng, cường độ và mật độ vận động.”

3) TÍNH ĐA DẠNG – “Cho phép cầu thủ trải nghiệm nhiều thử thách thể chất đa dạng, đồng thời tôn trọng quá trình thích nghi của cơ thể bằng cách điều chỉnh khối lượng vận động một cách phù hợp.”

Performance environments don't become elite because you buy more technology or hire more people.
They become elite when there is a clear philosophy, structure and alignment between all the people involved!!
That's a big part of what I'm working on through Performance 47 with Clubs, Academies, Federations & Individual Players’ across Southeast Asia.

It was a privilege to spend three days at Southampton FC supporting the coaching and performance staff during their pre-season programme.
A huge thank you to Adam Lallana and Dean Wilkins for the invitation. Having previously worked alongside both of them during our journey from League One to the Premier League, it was great to reconnect and contribute in a different capacity.
The focus of the consultancy was to share my experiences and philosophy around pre-season planning and periodisation in elite football, while providing coach education, informal mentoring and facilitating discussion around performance principles and training system design.
Alongside the workshops, I had the opportunity to observe the U21 environment in action. I was impressed by the quality of coaching, the technical knowledge across the multidisciplinary team, and the collaborative culture that exists to support player development.
I hope my experiences helped reinforce a number of key performance principles, challenged a few assumptions and sparked conversations around how coaching and performance staff can continue to evolve their planning, integration and training processes to maximise the development of the talented young players within the programme.
Thank you to everyone at Southampton FC for the warm welcome, the openness to share ideas and the opportunity to contribute. I look forward to seeing the continued progress of both the staff and players throughout the season.
