🛡️ WHY DO SOME TRANSFORMERS HAVE HOT-DIP GALVANIZED TANKS?

In coastal areas, humidity and salt-laden air increase the risk of corrosion on steel tanks. Hot-dip galvanizing helps protect transformer tanks under these conditions.

🔹 Forms a protective layer on the steel surface
After surface preparation, the steel tank is immersed in molten zinc, forming a firmly bonded coating before final transformer assembly.

🔹 Reduces corrosion from environmental exposure
The zinc coating acts as a barrier between the steel and the environment, helping maintain the tank’s durability.

🔹 Provides additional cathodic protection
Like conventional paint coatings, the zinc coating provides barrier protection. It can also protect steel exposed at minor scratches through cathodic protection.

The level of protection depends on the coating quality and the corrosivity of the installation environment.

⚠️ HOW TO IDENTIFY OIL LOSS IN A TRANSFORMER

Transformer oil provides electrical insulation and helps dissipate heat. If the oil level appears to fall, the cause should be checked promptly.

🔎 CHECK THE OIL LEVEL INDICATIONS

Under normal conditions, the oil level indicator float stays in its expected position. DGPT2 and DMCR devices should show the specified oil level. Always compare the indication with the reference marks for the device installed.

A lower float, or the red warning mark visible on the indicator shown, calls for further investigation. In a DGPT2 or DMCR, gas accumulation can also lower the float. Its position alone does not confirm an oil leak.

💧 CHECK POSSIBLE LEAK POINTS

Look for oil traces around monitoring device connections, bushing bases, the transformer tank cover gasket, and the oil drain valve. Check temperature readings and any alarms as part of the assessment.

If you notice an abnormal indication, contact MBT’s technical team for support in identifying the cause and planning appropriate maintenance.

⚡ PRE-DELIVERY TESTING OF MBT DRY-TYPE TRANSFORMERS

Before leaving the factory, MBT dry-type transformers undergo a series of inspections and tests, including visual inspection, winding resistance measurement, voltage ratio measurement, vector group verification, insulation performance checks, and measurements of no-load and short-circuit parameters.

These tests verify that each transformer complies with its design specifications and operates reliably, while enabling any deviations to be identified before delivery.

Beyond meeting electrical performance requirements, MBT dry-type transformers have also undergone testing at KEMA Labs and meet the requirements for climatic class C4, environmental class E4, and fire-behaviour class F1 in accordance with IEC 60076-11.
