๐Ÿ” Among the lithics collected by Dr Alan Massey (Loughborough University) at Scalford is this intriguing group of possible Late Upper Palaeolithic artefacts.

๐Ÿชจ The assemblage includes a large unidirectional blade core, a smaller prismatic core, and two blades.

๐Ÿน Most interestingly, one small backed artefact may represent a Creswell point.

๐ŸงŠ Creswell points are associated with Late Upper Palaeolithic technology in Britain, although identification from a single artefact must remain provisional.
Barton et al. (2003) emphasise the importance of considering these points alongside the wider blade technology.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Particularly interesting is the regional context: Bradgate Park, Leicestershire, has previously produced a possible open-air Creswellian assemblage.

Tiny tools, big stories. ๐Ÿ”

These little beauties are Mesolithic microliths and bladelets from Scalford, Leicestershire. The assemblage includes finished and fragmentary microliths, retouched bladelets, and even some possible blanks and waste flakes left over from making them.

And that's the exciting bit. It's not just a landscape thousands of years ago. Proper hands-on prehistory, no putting the finished tools; it's the leftovers too. Together they show that people were flintworking right here in the Scalford n intended. โœ‹

๐Ÿช“The collection includes both flaked and polished examples, worked from a variety of stone types. Polished axes were a gentle but essential part of Neolithic life, used for woodworking and slowly clearing woodland for early farming communities.

๐Ÿช“Beyond their function, these axes offer a soft glimpse into how prehistoric people chose their materials, exchanged goods, and shaped stone with quiet skill, long before metal ever entered the picture.

This group of ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐›๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ž ๐Œ๐ž๐ฌ๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐œ ๐Ÿ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค, recovered from ๐’๐œ๐š๐ฅ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐, ๐‹๐ž๐ข๐œ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ซ๐ž, offers a fascinating glimpse into prehistoric life in the English Midlands.

Among the assemblage, two blades stand out. One is a regular elongated blade, characteristic of ๐Œ๐ž๐ฌ๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐œ ๐›๐ฅ๐š๐๐ž-๐›๐š๐ฌ๐ž๐ ๐ซ๐ž๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ญ๐ž๐œ๐ก๐ง๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ฒ, while the other shows clear evidence of retouching and notching, demonstrating how stone tools were carefully modified for specific tasks.

Together with the smaller bladelets found alongside them, these artefacts provide strong evidence of ๐Œ๐ž๐ฌ๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐œ ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ within the Scalford landscape. They remind us that even thousands of years ago, people were selecting raw materials, refining their techniques, and producing tools tailored to their daily needs.

This remarkable lithic assemblage from ๐’๐œ๐š๐ฅ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐, ๐‹๐ž๐ข๐œ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ซ๐ž, recovered by ๐ƒ๐ซ. ๐€๐ฅ๐š๐ง ๐Œ๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฒ during fieldwalking in the early 2000s, spans thousands of years of technological change from the Mesolithic to the Early Bronze Age.

The assemblage includes:
1๏ธโƒฃ A multidirectional flint core demonstrating repeated flake removal from multiple striking platforms.
2๏ธโƒฃ A unidirectional blade core, likely dating to the Neolithic.
3๏ธโƒฃ4๏ธโƒฃ Two distinctive plano-convex knives from the Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age, demonstrating variation within this important artefact class during that period.
5๏ธโƒฃ A striking orange-red chert piercer, consistent with forms known from the Mesolithic to the Neolithic.

Together, these artefacts reveal changing technologies, evolving lifeways and the enduring importance of the Scalford landscape throughout prehistory. From core reduction and blade production to specialised cutting and perforating tools, they provide a fascinating glimpse into the ingenuity of prehistoric communities in Leicestershire.
