You are confused which certification to get and looking for the most suitable course?
You do not know what the acronyms of these certificates mean and what benefits you get after completing the above courses?
We demystify it all in this article, let's get started!
TEFL, TESL, TESOL and CELTA, what are the differences?
• TEFL stands for "Teaching English as a Foreign Language": This course provides students with skills to teach English to students living in countries where English is not the main language.
• TESL stands for "Teaching English as a Second Language": On the other hand, this course is a certificate that provides English knowledge to teach students whose native language is not English but live in a country where English is the mother tongue language.
• TESOL stands for “Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages”: This course basically teaches teachers the necessary knowledge to teach students whose native language isn’t English. This encompasses both TEFL and TESL and can mean either one or both.
• CELTA stands for "Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages" : this is the same course as TESOL for the scope of validity and value, but because CELTA is organized by Cambridge University with more rigorous input and output recruitment processes, the fair value is also slightly higher than TESOL. To make it easier to imagine if TESOL scored 9 points on a 10-point scale, the CELTA score would be 9.25.
Certificates held by Cambridge are often well respected so the tuition is quite expensive, but that does not mean that only Cambridge can organize good courses. There are many schools as well as institutions providing the same quality of training as Cambridge. And although CELTA is considered to be the best teaching qualification, there are also many experts and learners who evaluate TESOL with better value. In short, the true value of any courses/certificates is actually measured by the actual experience of each practitioner. The problem is because there are many TESOL courses organized by many different organizations, there are a lot of changes in quality and price.
CELTA
Organized and awarded by Cambridge ESOL
Course duration:
Full time: 4 to 5 weeks
Price: ranging from 1,500 USD to 3,500 USD
Prerequisites:
Over 18 years old and qualified for English (usually determined by a test and phone interview)
Course:
6 hours of hands-on teaching is assessed with realistic EFL classes at two levels of ability
4 writing exercises: one focused on adult learning; one about the English language system; one about language skills; and a lesson about classroom teaching.
To be awarded a certificate, you must pass both the teaching practice component and the writing exercise.
TESOL / TEFL / TESL
Organized by many different organizations (these organizations must meet the criteria for licensing)
Course duration:
The tuition and the course duration depend on the operations. Course duration is about a week, few months. However, a valuable TESOL courses usually have about 100 hours.
Price: from 200 to 4,000 USD, but it is usually cheaper than CELTA
Prerequisites:
Depends entirely on the opening TESOL certification operations.
Course program:
No specific program is in place, so each organization will have their own teaching methods and content. Even some places only teach online and there are no teaching practice sessions. And of course, studying these degrees will be more easy than the CELTA course.
Quality control:
Again, it completely depends on the school. Some are very strict some not.
The point is:
- Choose to study CELTA if you want the best chance for your CV to be appreciated by the majority of potential employers.
- Choose to study the TESOL certificate if you want an option that is cheaper / easier / shorter but worth nearly the same as CELTA.
- And of course, if you have envisioned the great benefits of these two qualifications for your future, spending money and time to learn CELTA / TESOL will certainly no longer be a difficult consideration.
