Le ginseng Ngoc Linh est distribué principalement dans la forêt et la montagne Ngoc Linh, située dans la mer bordant les provinces de Kon Tum, les hauts plateaux centraux et Quang Nam, la côte centrale sud, à partir de 1200m ou plus. (selon certains registres très précis vers 1500 ou plus t**d). Le ginseng pousse concentré au pied de la montagne Ngoc Linh, une montagne de 2578 m de haut, avec un sol rouge-jaune sur granit de plus de 50 cm d'épaisseur, beaucoup d'humus, spongieux.

Sâm Ngọc Linh chỉ phân bố tại vùng rừng núi Ngọc Linh tại vùng giáp ranh giữa Kon Tum tỉnh (thuộc vùng Tây Nguyên), và Quảng Nam (thuộc vùng duyên hải Nam Trung Bộ) của Vietnam. Ở độ cao từ 1.200m trở lên (theo một số tài liệu thì độ cao chính xác là khoảng từ 1.500m trở lên), đạt mật độ cao nhứt ở khoảng từ 1.700 - 2.000m dưới tán rừng già. Sâm mọc tập trung dưới chân núi Ngọc Linh, một ngọn núi cao 2.578m với lớp đất vàng đỏ trên đá granite dày trên 50cm, độ mùn cao, tơi xốp và rừng nguyên sinh còn rộng.
