Workforce underperformance is almost never what it seems on the surface.
In the last post we discussed the top four most common, visible signs of workforce underperformance: low employee productivity, high employee turnover, “firefighting” managers, and failure to innovate or adopt new technologies. These are the most common, visible signs of underperformance.
Logically, the next step is to understand the causes behind those symptoms: diagnosis. Without this step, solutions are often misguided. Just as in personal health, treating only the cough without knowing whether it comes from a cold, asthma, or infection will not lead to a full and speedy recovery.
Why Causes Matter
1️⃣A symptom can come from a single cause. For example, poor delegation may directly create “firefighting” managers.
2️⃣More often, symptoms result from combinations of causes. For example, weak digital skills together with skills mismatch can lower productivity and slow innovation.
3️⃣Diagnosis means connecting the surface signs with their underlying reasons.
