As soon as she started her academic career in the beginning of the 1970s, Pr. Duong Thi Thanh Luong understood that renewable energy was the future of Vietnam and the challenges. She discovered a passion research and as the head of the Research Center for Thermal Equipment and Renewable Energy (RECTERE) at the University of Technology of Ho Chi Minh City since 1986, she conducted many successful and award praised projects during 20 years. Thus, she is known as the pioneer in Vietnam for renewable energy, especially in implementation of wind turbines and thermal solar. By 2006, the researches she did with her colleagues at RECTERE were officially put in application with the first solar water heaters and the wind equipments to generate electricity. The idea of creating the Energy Development Centre (EDEC) was to carry on the legacy of the researches since she was a lecturer of the University of Technology. EDEC officially receives the activity license issued by Department of Science and Technology of Ho Chi Minh City in November 2011 in response to the awareness of people and the government to the renewable energy issues, which are still under-explored compared with the potential of Vietnam
