One area where regional sourcing still plays an important role is technical and higher-spec fabrics.

Vietnam can produce a wide range of fabrics locally, but sourcing becomes more challenging when buyers require specific performance, composition, finishing, certifications or consistent volumes.

Vietnamโ€™s textile and garment industry currently localizes around 50% of its materials and inputs overall, while domestic fabric production meets only about 36% of demand. This indicates that fabric remains an important sourcing gap, particularly when requirements go beyond standard specifications.

Rather than simply being a limitation, this can be part of a practical manufacturing model: Vietnam can remain the production base, while selected upstream materials are sourced regionally where needed.

For companies considering Vietnam, the key is therefore not whether every input can be localized immediately, but which parts of the supply chain can be sourced competitively in Vietnam today, and where regional sourcing still makes strategic sense.

If youโ€™re evaluating Vietnam as part of your manufacturing network, understanding these sourcing gaps early can help build a more realistic production strategy.
