Cashew nuts price depends on many factors such as grain size, nutritional content, origin, processing stage, and market impact…. but in general, they are most affected by the following three factors:

𝟏. 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐰 𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐬
Cashew nut prices depend heavily on processing. Because to have the final product, cashew will have to go through many stages of processing, as well as various screening. Each facility has a different processing process, so the quality of each facility’s cashew will also be different.

𝟐. 𝐓𝐲𝐩𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐰𝐬
Depending on the size of the nut, the color, and the rupture of the cashew nut, they are divided into different categories.
- W: Wholes
- S: Splits
- B: Butts
- P: Pieces
- LWP: Large White Pieces
- SWP: Small White Pieces
- BB: Baby Bits
Popular are the following types: W450, W320, W240, W210, W180, SK1, WS, LP, SP

𝟑. 𝐎𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐰𝐬
The origin of cashew nuts significantly affects their quality and nutritional composition. In fact, cashews harvested in different places will have a quality difference significantly. In Vietnam, Binh Phuoc is known as the best supplier of cashew nuts. The climate and soil of Binh Phuoc are suitable for cashew development and create products of superior quality over other lands.

𝗕ì𝗻𝗵 𝗣𝗵ướ𝗰 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗲𝘄 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝘀

BÌNH PHƯỚC — The south-eastern province of Bình Phước plans to intercrop and breed livestock in 10,000ha of cashew orchards by 2025 to increase farmers’ incomes.

Bù Đăng District will account for 8,000ha, Bù Gia Mập for 1,000ha and the remaining localities for 1,000ha, according to the province People’s Committee’s plan of intercropping other plants and breeding animals.

The plan targets growing coffee, cacao or medicinal plants, intercropping one, two or more varieties of plants, and raising chickens, ducks or goats.

Besides, it aims to increase the intercropping area to 15,000ha by 2030.

In recent years this model has offered farmers higher incomes than monoculture crops, according to the province Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

It also helps avoid the risks posed by price volatility and diseases.

But the model has yet to become widespread because growing other crops needs large volumes of water for irrigation while animal breeding has to meet disease safety criteria, it said.

The country’s largest cashew producing province has about 8,000ha of intercropped farms with mostly coffee, cacao, pepper, and fruits grown on them or buffalo, cows and goats raised.

Most farmers who grow cacao in their cashew orchards get average annual yields of 1.3-1.5 tonnes of cacao and 2.5-3 tonnes of cashew per hectare, which fetch incomes of VNĐ90-120 million (US$3,800-5,100).

Intercropping three crops fetches VNĐ143 million ($6,000).

In contrast, growing only cashew fetches only VNĐ40 million ($1,700).

To increase cashew intercropping, the province will step up advocacy, including through the media, to encourage farmers to participate.

It will organise training courses for farmers and monthly meetings for them to compare notes.

After 15 years of cashew zoning plans, both the area under the nut and yields have increased, according to the province People’s Committee.

Now there is a total of 152,000ha, or more than 50 per cent of the country’s total.

The average yield was 0.73 tonnes in 2017 and it doubled by 2021.

Cashew is one of the province’s key crops and is grown on more than 24 per cent of its total farmlands.

Linkages between farmers and companies remain limited to some concentrated growing areas.

Profits from cashew are lower than from crops like coffee, pepper, cacao, and fruits.

The province has more than 71,600 cashew farmers and 1,400 processors who sell domestically and export, and employ 50,000 agricultural labourers.

The nut accounts for a third of the province’s export income of more than $1.5 billion a year. — VNS

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐰 𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐬?

According to Tridge, Europe is the largest importer of cashews nut kernels in the world, accounting for 35-40% of global cashew import value. The value of European cashew nut imports increased by an average of 2% a year in the 2017-2021 period, and volumes increased 6.5% annually over the same time. Cashew nut imports continued to increase in 2021, when the imported volume was 11 thousand tonnes more than in 2020. Virtually all cashew imports from outside Europe come from developing countries.

Although the demand for cashew nuts in the European market is quite stable, it is influenced by price fluctuations. The price of cashew nuts is higher compared to most other nuts on the European market. A high price can impact consumer behaviour, as they may turn to other, cheaper nuts. The high price can influence the demand for cashews by companies that use them as an ingredient for nut mixes, breakfast mixes or vegan spreads, dairy and cheeses. If cashews are expensive, the manufacturers will reduce the share of cashew nuts in a mix and increase the shares of cheaper nuts.

During 2021, despite the impact of COVID-19, cashew nut retail prices in Europe continued to fall, which boosted at-home consumption. On the other hand, due to lockdown measures, consumption in the industry and food service segments decreased significantly and there was a shift from eating out to eating at home. However, lockdowns, health food trends and attractive prices boosted the total consumption of cashew nuts.

Cashew exports in April hit record high

VOV.VN - Vietnam exported 51,400 tonnes of cashew worth US$305.48 million throughout April, representing a rise of 5.6% in volume and 5.2% in value compared to April last year and reaching the highest level since October 2021, according to figures released by the General Department of Vietnam Customs.

During the course of the four-month period, the country shipped 162,400 tonnes of cashew worth US$952.5 million, marking an increase of 6.1% in volume and 4.5% in value against the same period from last year.

April alone witnessed the average export price of Vietnamese cashew nuts reach US$5,944 per tonne, the highest level since October 2022, while the four-month export value stood at US$5,865 per tonne, a drop of 1.5% compared to last year's corresponding period.

Cashew nut exports during the opening four months of the year to the United States, the Netherlands, Australia, Canada, and Germany saw a downward trajectory, while exports to markets such as China, the United Arab Emirates, the UK, and Saudi Arabia experienced an upward trend.

According to statistics from the China Customs, Chinese cashew imports in the first quarter of the year reached 8,420 tonnes worth US$33.88 million, up 45% in volume but down 0.6% in value on-year.

Of the figure, China imported approximately 4,720 tonnes of cashew from the Vietnamese market, worth US$27.72 million, up 20.6% in volume and 7.2% in value.

The market share of Vietnamese cashew nuts as part of China’s total imports fell from 67.41% in the first quarter of 2022 to 56.05% in the first quarter of the year.

Most notably, the northern neighbour has shifted to importing cashews from African markets such as Benin, Ivory Coast, Togo, and Tanzania.

Do you like cashews but worry about the calories? Well, they don’t have as many as first believed.

A scientific study, published in the journal Nutrients, has found that the energy content from cashews is less than previously thought! In fact, CASHEWS MAY HAVE FEWER CALORIES than those stated on food labels. In addition, researchers found that 42 grams per day of cashews did not increase levels of LDL cholesterol, otherwise known as bad cholesterol.

Because cashews are high in iron, which contributes to the normal function of the immune system. And not only that, they are good for our planet too: the cashew tree doesn’t need a lot of water, so they grow in poor, dry soil, making them perfect for reforestation programs.

Moreover, including cashews in your diet may help you. Do you want to know why?
