Vietnam’s durian export value reached more than US$500 million in the first five months, an increase of more than 18 times against the same period last year.

In May, the export value of durian reached the highest level ever, at $332 million, more than 10 times higher than the previous month.

Two weeks ago, some 700 trucks, most of them carrying durian, were stuck trying to enter China from Vietnam’s Lang Son Province, prompting Vietnamese authorities to negotiate with their Chinese counterparts to solve the congestion.

China has agreed to extend the working time for customs clearance of farm products from Vietnam by two more hours to 10 p.m. (Hanoi time).

Lang Son Customs accompanies enterprises to promote the export of agricultural products

China’s frequent changes in border management policies and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic have directly affected the export of goods through the province, especially agricultural products.
However, in the first four months of 2023, China loosened control measures to prevent and control the Covid-19 pandemic, import and export activities at border gates in Lang Son province have been restored to the level of the same period in 2022, especially for export agricultural products.

Lang Son Customs has requested border-gate customs branches to boost administrative reform, run the electronic customs clearance system in association with the implementation of the "digital border gate platform”; promptly support and remove difficulties for enterprises; actively coordinate with other authorities in the area to carry out solutions to improve customs clearance capacity, create maximum convenience for exporting agricultural products through the province, organize channelization when there is congestion at the border gate to quickly release goods, minimize costs for businesses, Mr. Nguyen Anh Tai said.

Shipping lines have been creating services in the Indian sub-continent and the Middle East as these regions are now creating hubs for manufacturers, and there is the infrastructure to support ocean transport, according to Container xChange’s latest monthly report.

Amid rising geopolitical tensions between the US and China, manufacturers have been diversifying their production bases away from China and to other regions, such as the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia.

Recently, COSCO Shipping Ports announced the US$375 million purchase of a 25% stake in Egypt’s Sokhna New Container Terminal. French carrier CMA CGM announced the launch of the new Bangladesh India Gulf Express (BIGEX) service, which began sailing from the port of Chittagong on 5 April, and will offer Bangladesh and India a direct connection with the Persian Gulf.Container xChange also noted that Maersk Line integrated two emerging markets – West & Central Asia and Africa – to form a new combined IMEA (Indian sub-continent, Middle East and Africa) region.

The Middle East and North Africa have high demand for fruits and vegetables, offering Vietnamese firms a great opportunity to boost exports, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

HCM City (VNS/VNA) - The Middle East and North Africa have high demand for fruits and vegetables, offering Vietnamese firms a great opportunity to boost exports, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
They import large volumes of agricultural products, including fruits and vegetables.

Of the exports to MENA, cashew is the largest item. Vietnam also exports coconut products (mature coconut, copra and coconut oil), lemon, almond, macadamia, banana, grapefruit, guava, mango, mangosteen, watermelon, lychee, rambutan, plum, carrot, and radish to the region.

To be successful, Vietnamese firms should understand the regulations in each market, including food hygiene and safety and pesticide residue requirements, and labelling in local languages, she said.

Hanoi (VNA) – Seventeen Vietnamese enterprises are participating in the 2023 Seafood Expo North America, which opened at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Centre in Massachusetts state on March 12.

This year’s three-day expo draws the participation of hundreds of aquatic product and seafood exporters from different states of the US, and other countries like Canada, Brazil, Japan, India, Scotland, Ireland, Norway, Spain, and Vietnam.

The participation of Vietnamese enterprises in North America’s largest seafood expo shows that Vietnamese products have gained a firm foothold in such a choosy market like North America.

Global prices have been decreasing since the second half of last year and are expected to fall further this year as supply rises sharply to six million tons, VASEP general secretary Truong Dinh Hoe said Friday at a shrimp industry conference.

VASEP general secretary Truong Dinh Hoe says shrimp exporters face fierce competition from Ecuador and India this year.

Le Van Quang, chairman of Minh Phu Seafood Corp., said Vietnamese shrimp costs are too high due to low aquaculture productivity, making it difficult to compete with Ecuador and India.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Do Thang Hai made the request at a meeting with a USDA delegation led by Jennifer Lester Moffitt, Under Secretary of Agriculture for Marketing and Regulatory Programmes, and Alexis Taylor, Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs, in Hanoi on February 27.

The Deputy Minister asked the USDA to accelerate the approval process for irradiation facilities to boost the export of Vietnam’s fresh fruits, frequently share information, and coordinate to create favourable conditions for Vietnamese businesses to take part in activities promoting the trading of farm produce, especially fresh fruits and canned agricultural products, in the US.

Agreeing with the Vietnamese ministry’s views, the USDA officials said both sides should continue boosting the discussion on the market opening for the fruits mentioned by the US and the creation of optimal conditions for some plant and nut-based products and animal feed to be imported into Vietnam.
