Super excited to officially launch our new project with EFKS Maugafiafia, led and implemented by the Autalavou of Maugafiafia, with the support of Reverend Iomatana Te’o, this initiative will divert food and organic waste from 20 households every week, transforming it into rich organic compost for healthier soil and a healthier Samoa.
Using May Bruce technology alongside the SPICe inoculant microbial booster, we’ll rapidly break down food waste and convert it into high quality compost that can be mixed back into the soil, closing the loop. A true example of a in action.
We celebrated this milestone with a zero‑waste, plastic‑free event, staying true to the values this project represents.
Funded by Environment and Climate Change through the support of Recycle Organics, and implemented by Waste Recycling Environment Network - WREN, with deep gratitude for the support enabling community‑led solutions in the Pacific. Canada in the Pacific

December last year, we officially launched our community program — an important step toward a more circular and sustainable Samoa.

Our project, “Community‑Centred Circular Solutions: Transforming Organic Waste into High‑Quality Compost,” tackles one of our biggest challenges — excess at Tafaigata Landfill — while supporting communities to create nutrient‑rich compost, healthier soils, and lasting environmental knowledge. 🌱

With valuable support from , we kicked off a six‑month pilot with new composting infrastructure and capacity‑building workshops.

Looking ahead to 2026, we’re excited to extend the program to more villages across Upolu, including Tanoalei’a and Maugafiafia, building stronger community ownership and household participation.

We’re grateful to the of Natural Resources and Environment Samoa (MNRE) and all our partners who share our vision for cleaner, more resilient island communities. Together, we’re turning organic waste into a valuable resource — and empowering change from the ground up. ♻️

🗓️ 2nd Joint Coordinating Committee (JCC) Meeting

The Government of Samoa, through the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE), in partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has officially launched the Third Phase of the Project for the Promotion of Regional Initiative on Solid Waste Management in Pacific Island Countries (J-PRISM III).

This phase aims to strengthen self-sustaining solid waste management systems and promote the 3R + Return principles—Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Return—in Samoa and across the Pacific region.

On 16 July 2025, the Second Joint Coordinating Committee (JCC) Meeting was held at the MNRE conference rooms. The meeting objectives were to:

•Review progress since the project’s launch on 1 June 2024

•Address implementation challenges and identify areas for improvement

•Confirm strategic priorities for the upcoming phase

In alignment with the project’s sustainability goals, the meeting was proudly conducted as a plastic-free event, further demonstrating Samoa’s leadership in environmental responsibility.

This initiative is a testament to the strong and enduring partnership between Samoa and Japan, and to both countries’ shared commitment to environmental sustainability and regional collaboration.

Special acknowledgement to Sipaia, who has stepped up as the Country Project Coordinator, playing a key role in the successful delivery of this important milestone.

In light of the growing threats posed by climate change, it is essential to shift from a linear model of consumption to a circular economy, where resources are reduced, reused, and recycled to minimise waste. This approach runs in parallel with global sustainability goals and offers an opportunity to leverage innovation and community engagement for lasting impact. By rethinking how we use resources and manage waste, we can create a more resilient and environmentally responsible future.
