The Montserrat Civil Service Association (MCSA) is pleased to announce the selection of Sis. Althea Allen as the new Chair of the Women’s Committee. Her appointment marks an important step in strengthening the voice, participation, and leadership of women within the trade union movement.
Sis. Allen brings with her a strong commitment to the principles of equality, dignity, and solidarity that guide the work of the Women’s Committee. In her new role, she will lead initiatives aimed at empowering female members, supporting their engagement in union activities, and addressing issues that disproportionately affect women in the workplace and society.
The Women’s Committee serves as a key platform within the Civil Service Association for promoting gender equality, encouraging leadership development, and ensuring that the perspectives and concerns of Women are reflected in union advocacy and policy discussions.
Under Sis. Allen’s leadership, the Committee will pursue a structured one-year Action Plan designed to strengthen member engagement, education, and wellbeing. The plan emphasizes collaboration with other equality structures within the union and focuses on building awareness, skills, and confidence among women members. It will also support the union’s broader commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion across all sectors of the workforce.
The Committee’s work will be guided by several key principles, including equality and respect, solidarity across all union groups, education and empowerment, and the promotion of physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. Through these principles, the Women’s Committee seeks to foster a culture where all members are valued and supported, and where harmful stereotypes and workplace discrimination are actively challenged.
During the coming year, the Committee will focus on priority themes such as women’s mental health and wellbeing, workplace health and safety, equality and respectful workplaces, leadership development, and increased member engagement and activism.
Particular attention will also be given to raising awareness about anti-bullying, sexual harassment prevention, and the promotion of dignity at work. Promoting equality, respect, and positive workplace culture will remain central to the Committee’s work. Educational initiatives will address topics such as equality, consent, and respectful behaviour, while supporting broader union campaigns aimed at eliminating sexual harassment and strengthening dignity-at-work protections.
The Committee will also work closely with other equality committees to develop joint initiatives that advance inclusion and solidarity throughout the union. The Committee will also play an important role in policy input and representation within the union.
By submitting motions and recommendations, participating in policy discussions, and reporting regularly to the branch executive, the Committee will ensure that women’s perspectives are clearly represented in union decision-making and strategic planning.
The Montserrat Civil Service Association congratulates Sis. Althea Allen on her selection and looks forward to her leadership in advancing the empowerment, wellbeing, and representation of women within the union.
