On the night of 16 May 1944, nearly 6,000 Roma and Sinti in Auschwitz-Birkenau were marked for the gas chambers. Armed with hammers, shovels, and boards torn from their own bunks, they barricaded themselves inside their barracks and refused to die quietly. The SS retreated. No Roma or Sinti died in the gas chambers that day — the only recorded uprising in Auschwitz.
In this episode, we honor 16 May as Romani Resistance Day a turning point in how our story is told. A history of resistance replaces a history of oppression.
