Cabral from Imperial unpack what science currently knows about labyrinthine patterns in nature and how these can be used in technology. These patterns are maze-like surfaces that look orderly up close, but wonderfully chaotic from afar.

What do butterfly wings, brain corals, and fingerprints have in common?

They all exhibit labyrinthine patterns: those mesmerising, maze-like surfaces that look orderly up close but wonderfully chaotic from afar.

In a new review featured as the cover article in the scientific journal Materials Horizons, Zain Ahmad and João T. Cabral from Triple-A-COAT partner Imperial College London unpack what science currently knows about these patterns, and how we can recreate them in the lab through a process called wrinkling.

At this stage in the project, we are commencing our demonstration of the Triple-A-COAT coatings within a staged bus environment. For this demonstration are working with our partner IVECO, who are providing a minibus, within which, we will apply some of our as well as controls for the experiment. Surfaces to be coated include the handrails, windows, seat surface and seat backs. The bus will then be infected with from isolated strains over a period of weeks, and samples taken to see how the Triple-A-COAT coatings perform.

Ivan Muñoz Ortiz, our partner from 2-0 LCA is leading the Life Cycle Assessment of the Triple-A-COAT-ings! Ivan has been with 2-0 LCA for over 12 years and is a specialist in environmental assessment of products and processes. Ivan has built his specialism over 20 years within the field, with roles as a Environmental Sustainability Scientist with Unilever and researcher roles with Universidad de Almería, University of Surrey and ESCI UPF. Ivan completed his PhD and degree in Environmental Sciences with the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

Lu Yuan is a vital member of the research team of Biomaterials-Associated Infections at UMCG who are leading on the toxicity testing for the Triple-A-COAT coatings. Lu has built a career translating scientific innovation into practical healthcare solutions through collaboration with academic, clinical and industrial stakeholders.

Lu Yuan has expertise in:
🧫Human-relevant in vitro models;
🧫3D tissue culture systems;
🧫Organ-on-chip platforms;
🧫Microbial control; and
🧫Biofilm treatment.

She completed her PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Groningen , following her masters in Materials Science with 四川大学 .
