I have spent the past 20 years in what I call the Visual Communications industry. Fourteen years in a customer service role for a letters, logos and plaques manufacturer and six years in a sales role in the printing industry. The thing is, I don't enjoy "selling" to people. Buyers are tired of being sold to, of being persuaded into making a purchase decision because a salesperson told them they have the best product/service at the best price in town. What I do enjoy is listening to the story behind where a business came from, where it wants to go and what are the obstacles in their path to success. Not every conversation finishes with me having a solution to offer, I often refer them to colleagues in my network that have a better solution for them. Best case scenario? I have something of value to add and we begin our relationship journey. Worst case scenario? We have made a connection and now have a better understanding of our respective businesses, and we know how to find each other should there be an opportunity to collaborate in the future.
