The UK is set to introduce a fast-track licensing process for fintech services startups, allowing provisional operations for up to 18 months while they seek full authorization, according to the Fintech Ministry. This initiative aims to reduce red tape and stimulate growth in the sector.

Firms that meet robust criteria will be permitted to conduct certain regulated activities with safeguards in place during this provisional period.

"Too many high-potential startups are hampered by long authorization times," stated Fintech Services Minister Lucy Rigby. "The new regime enables them to trade and grow faster."

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has faced criticism from fintech companies regarding slow and costly approval processes that hinder investment. The government has urged the FCA to alleviate this burden.

FCA Executive Director Sheree Howard emphasized that the new regime will remove entry barriers while maintaining high standards. The FCA will consult with industry stakeholders, consumers, and the government to ensure effective implementation.

Detailed eligibility criteria will be published by the FCA soon.
