New publication: Targeting nucleolin makes glioblastoma cells fragile

Glioblastoma is among the most treatment-resistant brain cancers. In part because it can survive treatments like chemotherapy and radiation by rewiring its cells' metabolism. A new study targeted nucleolin, a protein overexpressed on glioblastoma cell surfaces, using AS1411. AS1411 is a short DNA aptamer, a folded strand of DNA engineered to bind a target with antibody-like precision.

This treatment shifted tumor cell membranes toward a more rigid, saturated lipid composition, while also enriching lipids that fuel ferroptosis, a form of cell death driven by lipid oxidation. Together, these changes create a potential opening: cells under this stress may become more susceptible to therapies that push them toward ferroptotic death.

Lipotype's quantitative, species-level lipidomics analysis can be used to profile such lipid shifts across conditions.

Dresden is full of flavor(s) — and so is Lipotype

On August 31, Lipotype joined the banquet "Dresden is(s)t bunt," a celebration of diversity, openness, and respectful coexistence in Dresden, Germany. For its 10th edition in 2026, the event transformed Neumarkt around the Frauenkirche into one long communal table, bringing people together through conversation, culture, and shared experiences.

With 107 cultural partners and 98 sponsors participating, the banquet sent a strong message in support of an inclusive and welcoming Dresden.

This spirit of coming together reflects many of Lipotype's core values. As an international team, we believe that creativity, collaboration, and growth flourish in an open and welcoming community with diverse perspectives and meaningful connections. We were grateful to be part of a celebration that brought together so many people and organizations in support of a vibrant, inclusive, and forward-looking Dresden.

An Interview with the 2019 LEA Winner, Prof. Dr. Oliver Schmidt

In 2019, the Lipotype Excellence Award (LEA) was awarded to Prof. Dr. Oliver Schmidt from the Medical University of Innsbruck, Austria, to support research on the EGAD protein degradation pathway.
The research revealed that when certain membrane proteins accumulate, cells respond by altering their membrane lipid composition, enabling them to accommodate proteins that cannot be properly degraded. This data contributed to a Nature Communications paper published in 2024.

Last Tuesday, on August 25th, Lipotype had the pleasure of welcoming both familiar faces and new connections from MPI-CBG - Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics alums to our new office for the Lipotype Open Day & Networking Event.

During the networking session at MPI-CBG's 25th anniversary celebrations, visitors attended guided tours at Lipotype, seeing our new laboratory and office space at ADDRESS HERE. Melanie Weber, Kai Schuhmann and Jaekyung Pyo hosted the tours, followed by a Q&A session with team members from across the company.

We were happy to meet the crowd and share our favorite things about Lipotype. As a spin-off company founded from the laboratories of Kai Simons and Andrej Shevchenko at the MPI-CBG, hosting this event was particularly heartwarming for Lipotype members. We are grateful to everyone who attended and helped make the event such a success.

Special thanks to Jaekyung Pyo for leading the event organization, Olya Vvedenskaya, MD, PhD for promoting the event, Jeongeun Chae, EunGyeom Kim, and Sehui Myung for organizing the event and encouraging participation. New publication: Mitochondrial stress pushes brain immune cells toward senescence

Microglia, the brain's resident immune cells, support neuron health, yet how mitochondrial stress shapes them in the human brain has remained unclear. A new study finds that mitochondrial stress pushes human microglia into a senescent, dysfunctional state. It does so by depleting a key metabolic molecule, S-adenosylmethionine, and remodeling their lipids. This disrupts the signals microglia send to neighboring neurons and glia. Researchers modeled this shift directly in human brain organoids, where it triggered inflammatory signaling linked to neurodegenerative disease. The findings point to microglial aging as a specific contributor to neurodegenerative disease.

Lipotype lipidomics enables detailed profiling of the lipid changes that accompany cellular aging processes.

New case study: Advancing clinical lipidomics through quantification

Lipidomics is a great addition to precision medicine, but there's an issue we as a community need to keep addressing: measurements of the same lipids often differ from lab to lab, making results hard to compare or validate.

In 2017, lipidomics labs from all over the world put this to the test. Lipotype and 30 other laboratories each analyzed the same human plasma reference sample. The results pointed to one main culprit: the internal standards each lab used were different. Internal standards are the reference molecules of known concentration, added to calibrate lipid measurements. The use of different internal standards could explain most of the variation between labs.

The study turned this into a solution: consensus values, agreed reference concentrations for 339 lipids that any lab can now use to check and validate its own measurements. Lipotype lipidomics delivers absolute, reproducible lipid quantification for translational and clinical research.

Immunization Awareness Month reminds us that vaccination remains one of the most effective tools for protecting people of all ages from serious disease. The need for that protection does not end in childhood. It continues throughout life, and specific recommendations change with age.

That protection depends on more than the antigen, the substance in a vaccine that trains the immune system to recognize a specific pathogen. Vaccine adjuvants, like the lipid-based AS03, boost the immune response so smaller antigen doses still trigger lasting immunity. Lipidomics research has shown this works by reshaping cholesterol and phospholipid metabolism in immune cells.

Lipotype lipidomics analyses help researchers investigate these mechanisms, supporting the development of more effective vaccines.
