My Work Life Balance Consulting I help Canadian business owners turn messy books into clarity, confidence & profit. Why am I different from everyone else? What makes me special?

For over 20 years I have been helping companies, not just with bookkeeping, but with many more things. It is time for me to branch out and help as many business owners as I can with "Work Life Balance". I am able to connect with individuals on a level that makes them feel comfortable so that we can get down to the real reason why things are not working. I establish relationships with clients and help them achieve the goals that they had when they made the decision to start their businesses. The unfortunate thing is, people are good at what they go into business for(Carpentry, plumbing, electric, a product they have designed, consulting for various things), however, when it comes to the financial aspect of their company or the flow of how things work through their system, may or may not implode a business that could be successful. For numerous years at the beginning of my business, I was constantly putting out everyone's fires. I saw that things weren't working, but I had a lot of personal growing yet to do. A life coach diploma later, and a lot of growth, I am able to guide people through what they don't see, so they can concentrate on what they do best! Contact me for a consultation

Decide now what November and December are going to look like. They will not decide themselves kindly.

The last two months of the year have a way of arriving all at once. Year-end, the busy season, the holidays, and whatever you told yourself in September you would get to eventually.

Left alone, that becomes eight weeks of reacting.

So a short exercise, worth doing this week rather than in mid-November when it is academic.

Write down the three things that genuinely have to happen before the end of the year. Not the wish list. The three.

Then write down what you are prepared to let go of to protect them. This is the part people skip, and skipping it is why the list never works. Something has to give, and if you do not choose what, the choice gets made for you at eleven at night by whoever emailed most recently.

And then decide, actually decide, what you are not doing in December. Write it down. Tell someone.

The goal is not a perfect quarter. It is arriving in January without needing to recover from the way you got there.

If rest is not on the calendar, it is not going to happen.

This is the one that gets dismissed as soft, so let me put it in the least soft terms I can.

You are the constraint in your business. Not the market, not the competition, not the software. If you are depleted, output drops, decisions get worse, and the things that need your judgement get your leftovers instead.

Rest is not a reward for finishing. It is maintenance on the only piece of equipment you cannot replace.

Which means it needs the same treatment as anything else that matters. A slot, defended, that does not get moved the moment something else appears. If a client asked for that slot you would say you were busy, because you would be.

The part people find hardest is that it has to be scheduled before it is needed. By the time you feel you have earned it, you are already running on empty and the rest is repair rather than maintenance.

Pick a slot this week. Defend it once. See what actually happens.

Find one task this week that does not actually require you.

Not one you dislike. Those are different lists, and the second one is where your time is genuinely hiding.

Most owners can name the things they hate instantly. Far fewer can name the things that simply do not need their specific brain, which is usually a longer list and a more useful one.

Try it as a sorting question. If a competent person had clear instructions, could they do this without me? If yes, the only thing keeping it on your plate is that writing the instructions has never been the most urgent thing on any given day.

It never will be, incidentally. That is the trap. Documentation is never urgent right up until the week it is an emergency.

So pick one. Write down how it is done, in plain language, on one page. The trigger, the steps, where things live, how you know it is finished.

Then hand it to someone and watch where they get stuck. That is your second draft, and it is better than anything you would have written alone.

This year's Small Business Week theme is fast or finished. I want to gently disagree.

The framing is that speed is now the whole game, that there is no middle ground, and that your competition is moving faster than you.

I understand why that message exists. Some of it is even true. Things are moving quickly and pretending otherwise helps nobody.

But I work with small business owners every week, and I can tell you what actually finishes them. It is very rarely being too slow.

It is carrying everything in their own head until they cannot think straight. It is a year of decisions made on instinct because nobody had time to look at the numbers. It is the owner being the only person who knows how anything works, and then getting ill.

Speed did not cause any of that. In most cases speed made it worse.

The businesses I see still standing in year eight are not the fastest ones. They are the ones where somebody built something that does not require heroics to run on a normal Tuesday.

So by all means go to the events this week. There is good material in them. But if you leave feeling behind, I would check what you are measuring yourself against before you act on it.

Sustainable is not the opposite of ambitious.

Four shifts that give you your evenings back.

None of these require new software, a course, or a personality transplant. They are structural changes, which is why they hold when motivation does not.

Swipe through. Take one. Four attempted badly is worse than one done properly, and you already know that from every January you have ever had.

Which one are you picking?

A quieter post than usual, for the week after Thanksgiving.

Most business advice about this time of year is about the run to December. Finish strong. Hit the targets. Make the quarter count.

I want to suggest something less useful and probably more valuable.

Look back at January and ask what you were worried about then.

Almost everyone finds the same thing. Some of it resolved itself without intervention. Some of it turned out not to matter. A couple of things did matter and you handled them, though probably not in the way you had planned. And there is usually one thing you are still carrying that you were also carrying ten months ago.

That last category is the interesting one. Not because you failed to deal with it, but because something has kept it unresolved for nearly a year, and whatever that something is has survived multiple genuine attempts to fix it.

In my experience it is rarely a lack of effort. More often the thing needs a different kind of attention than the one available in a normal working week. It needs a decision nobody wants to make, or a conversation nobody wants to start, or a stretch of uninterrupted thought that the week never produces.

If you are carrying something like that into the last quarter, it may be worth asking what it would actually take to resolve rather than simply trying harder at it.

And the rest of it, the worries that dissolved on their own, are worth noticing too. You spent real energy on those. Most of us will spend the same energy again in January on a new set, most of which will also dissolve.

That is not an argument against planning. It is an argument for being a little gentler about the part of the load that is anticipation rather than work.

When did you last close the laptop and feel nothing about it?

Not relief. Not guilt. Not the mental list of what you are leaving undone. Just finished, for today.

For a lot of people the honest answer is a long time ago, or not since they started the business.

That low background guilt is worth paying attention to, because it is expensive. It means you are never quite resting, which means the rest does not do its job, which means you go into the next day with slightly less than you had the day before. Repeat for a year and it shows.

I am not going to tell you to be kinder to yourself, because that is not advice, it is a sentiment.

But I am curious. When was it, for you?

Pick the time you stop. Then actually stop.

Not when the work is finished, because it is never finished. Not when you feel you have earned it, because you will not.

A time. On a clock.

The objection is always the same, and it is worth taking seriously. Clients need me. Things come up. I cannot just stop at five.

Some of that is true. Most of it is not, and the way to find out which is to test it rather than assume.

Here is what I have watched happen when people try it. The genuine emergencies turn out to be rare, and they were always going to interrupt you anyway. What fills the evening is usually not urgent work. It is the low-grade availability, the checking, the half-reading of messages that you will properly answer tomorrow regardless.

You are not gaining much from those hours. You are just never fully off.

So pick a time this week. Tell one person what it is, because an expectation somebody else holds is far more durable than one you hold alone.

It's the quiet joke of self-employment. You went looking for freedom and ended up with a manager who knows exactly what is still outstanding, has access to your evenings, and does not accept excuses because they know all of yours.

The line between working and living stops existing. Not dramatically. It just erodes, a little each month, until you notice you are answering a message at the dinner table and nobody in the room finds that odd anymore.

I want to be careful here, because the usual advice is to want it more or care less, and neither works.

What works is structure. Deciding when the day ends before the day starts. Knowing what is genuinely yours to carry and what you have simply never handed over. Having somewhere for the open loops to live other than your own head.

That is not a mindset fix. It is a design problem, and design problems have solutions.

Ninety days is enough time to change something. It isn't enough to change everything.

October to December. That's what's left.

Long enough to fix one real thing — properly, with it still working in February. Not long enough for the full reinvention that tends to get planned in a burst of September energy and abandoned by the second week of November.

So if you're heading into Q4 with a list, I'd cut it. Hard.

Ask of each item: if this were the only thing I finished this year, would that have been worth it?

Usually one or two survive that question. Those are the real ones. The rest were noise dressed up as ambition, and letting them go isn't giving up — it's the thing that makes the survivors possible.

Then work backwards from December. What has to be true by the end of November? By the end of October? By Friday?

That last one is the only question that ever actually moves anything.
