So excited to share this update. We have a Keynote Speaker!

The Co-Design Institute is honored to welcome KA McKercher, author of Beyond Sticky Notes, as the Keynote Speaker for our 1st Annual National Virtual Co-Design Convening!

KA is known internationally for their co-design and co-production frameworks and tools. As the Author of Beyond Sticky Notes and the creator of the Model of Care for Co-design, they've focused on co-design in public health, community health, Indigenous solidarity and social care for 15+ years. KA brings all of who they are into their work with extra care for people experiencing oppression, trauma or minority stress. They aim to centre care and choice and make hard spaces, softer. As a designer and survivor, they aim to make things more beautiful (care, relationship, resources, physical spaces and more). There's plenty of KA's work you find online - in sensitive and politicized spaces. KA is a Research Associate in the Transgender Health Group with Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI). They're also a crafter, potter, gardener, hiker, yoga teacher, trainee death doula and swimmer.

We couldn't be more excited to have KA as our Keynote Speaker. Having them join us for our first national convening feels particularly meaningful.

Our Theme is Strong Foundations Build Strong Futures, we're bringing together lived experts, practitioners, community leaders, service designers, researchers advocates, and more who believe communities should have meaningful role in designing the systems, programs, policies, and services that impact them.

Yesterday had the amazing honor of sitting in on the policy retreat for the Washington Coalition for Homeless Youth Advocacy. So incredibly inspire to be apart of this work and to lobbying for young people all across our state who need it. Such a good time with so many great community partners.

Can’t wait to see what the next policy cyle brings with such amazing partners. Let’s keep doing the good work!

Announcing the 1st Annual National Virtual Co-Design Conference

📆October 14th, 2026
🕰️10am-3pm PST, 1:00pm-6:00pm

Over the last 5 years, our team has had the amazing privilege of working alongside communities, nonprofits, government agencies, libraries, advocates, researchers, and people with lived experience across the US to advance the practice of Co-Design.

Engaging communities is personal to me, I’ve seen it done well and sometimes not so good. When we began this work it became clear that intentional community engagement was still lacking in many spaces. Today, we see more organizations sharing power and creating the space for lived experts to share ownership in decision making.

To continue building this momentum, I am excited to announce the 1st Annual National Virtual Co-Design Conference.

This convening is designed to bring together service designers, co-designers, community engagement professionals, public sector leaders, researchers, advocates, and lived experts from across the country to share lessons learned, explore emerging practices, and strengthen our collective impact.

The theme of the year is:

🏗️Strong Foundations Build Strong Futures

At a time when programs, services, policies, and institutions face increasing challenges, we believe the best solutions are built WITH communities…not for them.

We are also thrilled to share that KA McKercher, author of Beyond Sticky Notes, has confirmed to speak as our closing Keynote speaker.

We are currently seeking:
âś…Attendees
âś…Sponsors and Conference Partners
âś…Volunteers interested in helping build the Co-Design community

Whether you are new to co-design or have been practicing for years, we hope you’ll join us as we create a space to learn, connect, and inspire one another.

If you are interested in attending please use the link.
Let’s continue building the future of co-design together.
