Vermont’s Bellows Falls Petroglyphs sit carved into solid rock along the Connecticut River and remain one of the state’s most puzzling historic sites. The human-like faces were pecked into the stone more than 1,000 years ago, likely by ancestors of the Abenaki people who lived and traveled this river for centuries. No one knows exactly why they were made, though many believe they held spiritual meaning tied to the river and nearby Great Falls. The carvings were largely forgotten and were rediscovered in the 1970s during periods of low water. Today, you can view them from a platform near the Vilas Bridge, just upstream from the Bellows Falls dam. On-site signs share their story, making this an easy, short stop with river views and deep history and local town pride.

AMAZING Appalachia!

This little shack has been holding its ground for a long time now.

Built more for need than comfort, it once kept the cold out just well enough and the warmth in just long enough. Smoke would’ve drifted up from that chimney, boots scraped mud off at the door, and lamplight flickered through those small windows after dark. It wasn’t fancy—but it was home.

Places like this sheltered hard lives and honest people. Folks rose early, worked late, and made do with what they had. Laughter, loss, prayers, and perseverance all lived under roofs just like this one. Every weathered board and sagging step carries the mark of time and the memory of those who passed through its door.

Now the woods are slowly reclaiming it. Silence has taken the place of voices. But even in its quiet, this old shack still tells a story—of resilience, simplicity, and a way of life that shaped Appalachia.

These are the places we don’t need to forget.

Meet THE RAVEN..a magnificent, brilliant beauty, do you agree?

I had been living alone for quite some time when he first appeared in my life. My days were quiet, predictable, and honestly a little too still. I’d read, knit, make tea, watch the sun move across the living room, small routines that filled the hours but didn’t quite fill the space.

One afternoon, I heard a soft tapping on my window. When I looked up, there he was, this glossy black crow staring right at me as if he’d been searching for me. I opened the door just to see what he’d do, and to my surprise, he hopped inside without hesitation, calm as anything.

He looked around, then came straight toward me and settled on my arm like he had been doing it his whole life. It startled me at first, but there was something comforting about the way he perched there, completely relaxed, like he had already decided we belonged to each other.

From that day forward, he visited every evening. No matter the weather, no matter the season, I would sit on this very couch, and a few minutes later he would arrive, hopping into the house with that soft confidence of his. He always climbs onto my hand first, then my lap, and finally settles right beside me, warm and steady.

I talk to him the way you talk to someone who really listens, not because he answers, but because he stays. He leans against me when I’m tired, watches me when I read, and every so often he’ll press his head gently against my arm as if reminding me I’m not as alone as I once felt.

He filled a quiet house with life again. Not with noise or chaos, just presence, warmth, and this peaceful companionship I never expected but now treasure more than anything.

Thank you for letting me share my story. Anyone who has ever had a crow choose to keep them company knows just how deeply those simple moments can heal a lonely heart.
