The haze closed more than a hundred schools in Sarawak this week.

Your office stayed open.

Here is the part nobody explains. A big building does not breathe through its windows. Machines on the roof pull outside air in, on purpose, so the people inside have fresh air.

This week that outside air carried smoke particles about 30 times finer than a human hair.

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit southern Japan. Rescue work is still going on, and our thoughts are with everyone affected.

The danger doesn't end when the shaking stops.

For every building that falls, thousands stay standing and look completely fine. Some of them aren't.

Cracks hide behind wall panels. Ceiling fixings shear where nobody can see. The next aftershock finds every weakness the first quake created.

That's why buildings need a proper damage assessment before people walk back in, even when everything looks normal.

A building that looks fine and a building that is fine are two different things. Only an assessment knows which one you have.

Insurance is getting cheaper across Asia right now, because there haven't been many big disasters lately. One insurance CEO just warned the market is being "lulled into a false sense of comfort."

At 10pm during a thunderstorm, three lifts stopped across two residential blocks - with residents trapped inside each one.

The question for the owner’s insurer was simple:
Lightning - or aging lifts?

Our investigation supported lightning as the cause.

But inside the motor room of one block, we found something the building owner did not know:

A severed copper earthing strip.

It did not change our conclusion about what caused the incident.

But it revealed a separate weakness in a system intended to provide a path to earth.
