Analysis by the NSW Government shows coal mines are on track to reduce net emissions broadly in line with the State’s legislated net emission reduction targets: 50% by 2030, 70% by 2035 and net zero by 2050.

NSWMC CEO Stephen Galilee wirtes in the Daily Telegraph today, highlighting the inconsistency in the treatment of workers at Hunter Valley Operations (HVO) compared to those at the Tomago Aluminium Smelter.

While politicians flocked to support the workers at Tomago with a $2.5 billion bail out, securing the jobs of 1,000 workers, an hour up the road 1,500 workers at HVO are still sweating a decision by the Independent Planning Commission (IPC).

“These 1,500 coal miners and the thousands of workers in the 750 local businesses that supply the mine haven’t asked for a handout.

A decision on the HVO project is expected within weeks. An approval will finally deliver some long-awaited good news for those 1500 mining workers. Like their colleagues at Tomago they will be finally able to smile again after years of uncertainty."

Should the unthinkable happen and a refusal prevail, the governments that stepped in to save the jobs of Tomago will need to act just as decisively to save the mining workers of HVO.”

According to the Australian National Greenhouse Accounts, coal mining in NSW is reducing emissions faster than almost any other major industry.

Emissions from coal mining are down 30.3% since 2005, which is higher than the state average of 29.7%.

Did you know emissions from coal mining in NSW are falling faster than any other major industry?

Official government data shows direct emissions from NSW coal mines have fallen by 30.3% since 2005.

While supporting tens of thousands of jobs and generating billions of dollars to help fund state services and infrastructure, coal mining accounts for just 13 percent of total state emissions and is tracking toward a 50 percent net reduction by 2030.
